It's hardly secret by now that Bungie, the studio behind the original Halo games and the Destiny franchise, is working on several concurrent projects alongside Destiny 2 itself, and a new job listing suggests that Destiny 2's own Tiger engine will run one of these new projects. The specifics of this unannounced third-person game are still unknown, however, with not much information to go on at all.

Destiny 2 veterans will know that Bungie hasn't been shy when it comes to admitting that the game's aging Tiger engine bottlenecked its development. While substantial changes and upgrades have been made to the engine ever since, some players are bound to have hoped that the studio would forego Tiger entirely for its next title, though this doesn't seem to have been the case.

The Game Post has reported on Bungie's new job listing for a Lead Gameplay Engineer that would work on an as-of-yet unannounced third-person game that's seemingly unrelated to Bungie's upcoming Matter game. TGP managed to snag a screenshot of the listing where it plainly referenced that the responsibilities of the position include the building and maintenance of the many disparate systems and features of Bungie's Tiger engine, though it's curious to note that this has since been amended to remove the engine reference from the document.

Bungie has been working hard to update the Tiger engine to support new features and systems over the past couple of years. In fact, Bungie doesn't sunset Destiny 2 content anymore thanks to substantial Tiger upgrades, making it seems like the days of technological bottlenecks may be over for the time being. Though it's strange that the official listing no longer mentions Tiger engine by name, Bungie is likely looking to leverage its staff's expertise in this particular software suite, rather than having to get its developers to learn how to work in an entirely different engine.

Alongside Matter and the unannounced third-person game, Bungie is now seemingly also working on a comprehensive live-service Marathon revival, to boot. Information is currently slim about all three of these projects, but if the third-person game does indeed end up leveraging Tiger engine in the end, it's entirely possible that the Marathon extraction shooter would end up getting handled similarly. The networking and live-service development that went into Tiger as part of Bungie's Destiny upgrades is bound to be useful for any other hypothetical live-service game, after all.

Yet, it's worth keeping in mind that Destiny 2's many technical issues have been around for close to a decade by now, and may be caused by Tiger's potential inadequacies in some respects. Only time will tell whether these problems will stay relevant even outside of Destiny's own ecosystem, however. As an aside, the fact that Bungie ended up removing the Tiger engine reference from the job listing post-haste may suggest mentioning it was a mistake in the first place.

Please allow us to use an optional third person view, even if it's a simple one that is only usable outside of combat/dialogue (so basically while you're exploring and such) which shouldn't be that huge of a timesink to make available since those animations should be fully modeled in third person already (since npc's will use them).

There are a lot of us who prefer to play in third person, even in games like TES/Fallout who aren't known for having the best third person cameras and of course Vampire: TMB which I played in third person as well.

One of the most fun aspects of an rpg for me is being able to visually customize my character and then as your go throughout the game and get new loot and gear seeing how your character visually changes throughout the game. This aspect is GREATLY diminished when you're stuck in first person view and basically never see this kind of thing at all (like Borderlands for instance).

I came here to ask the same , i cant play in first person for more than 10 min. my head start to hurt , i really hope we have a option to put the game in third person , thats how i paly Fallout 4 and Skyrim , i walk around and explore in 3rd person and only enter 1st person in combat. Anyway , amazing trailer , hope the game is a masterpiece.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was already in the game. I imagine they'd like for you to be able to admire your own avatar. Also, there's a bit in the trailer that maaaaybe implies it: when the old guy is saying "that's why I sought you out" and we see the back of someone in a "HOPE" spacesuit. I mean, it could be anything, but the framing of the moment suggested it was supposed to be the player.

I really hope they include this. I like to zoom out and see my character sometimes (though I love first person a LOT), and my girlfriend gets dizzy with 1st person, so PLEASE include 3rd person option as well.

Just wanting to throw in my 2 cents too. I would also love being able to switch to third person mode. I played New Vegas in third person like 95% of the time except when sniping. People have already listed many reasons why (motion sickness is a one for me too) but I also find it helps so much for situational awareness in melee encounters.

I do wonder how hard or easy this would be to implement. Obviously Fallout does it already but even a game like Borderlands or Destiny have third person modes that are playable and enjoyable that you can glitch or mod into.

I don't support them adding a third-person perspective (TPP) camera precisely because I think this is incorrect, and would require a significant amount of manpower to implement correctly. Manpower that would be better spent supporting core game systems and content.

The assumptions that all actions available to the player will be used and thus animated and rigged such that they map perfectly onto CHARNAME's paperdoll avatar is naive, as is the assumption that all wearable items by the player will already have player-appropriate textures. Add to that the issue of clipping planes and z-fighting when dealing with multiple items sharing the same space on the player's body, I simply don't think your assumption is correct.

If it was a freebie or easy, I expect they would do it. There's a not-insignificant amount of players who love playing dress-up in open world games with a TPP, and I'm sure they would enjoy capturing their purchase as well.

Nah, it makes sense especially on RPG. If you customise your character (looks, armour) it's nice to actually see them. But it seems Obsidian is going full 1st person which means that adding 3rd would be probably lots of work (is character even rendered? Animation? Armor fitting character? Collision? Etc.).

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

On the topic of talking in third person when referring to yourself, it is actually quite prevalent in cdrama, especially the historical ones, but it never shows up in translation because well... it sounds really weird in English and often there is no direct translation. So most translators just do away with it.

Great discussion! I tend to write in 3rd person, past tense but have written short stories in present. I think if the author is comfortable and can be consistent with whatever POV and tense he or she has chosen, most readers will also be comfortable with it.

present tense is not narrative. It is instruction. Screenplays are in present tense because they are instructions for the actors. Do this at this time, say this at this time, set the scene up this way. The content and narrative are secondary to the instruction. DO you like to read instruction manuals for fun? If not Why torture your readers in that way?

I also have found that where I used to LOVE third-omni (a la Stephen King) now I have a hard as hell time getting into books that are third-omni. I prefer third-limited, or first person. (I hate second person with the heat of a thousand suns.)
