Ladies and Gentlemen,

I just don't understand. I'm not posting to make the top 10 or bottom 10 popularity list. I just want to make some sense.

Here are a few of my observations after being a member of the Bullseye list for 8 years:

When posting long enough, one will offend someone and/or be offended. There have been numerous topics over the years that have attracted much discussions only to be deemed nonsense by a few who chose not to use the delete key. These may include list members whom I respect and yet the moderator didn't think these topics should cease. I don't understand.

One example was when a shooter complained of brass from a neighboring shooter hitting his face and possibly his eye, and as I recalled, intentionally. Rather than offering solutions, the poster was told to "take it like a man" and quit complaining. Hot brass in the face and eyes was not the problem, rather it was the poster. End of discussion.

The condo gun box discussion was amusing. I don't know the owner and I'm sure he is a fine person but the giant gun box was placed on his left when the wind came from the left during the national matches. Later the gun box was placed on the right when the wind came from the right. The ones who thought this wasn't right were quickly countered by those who essentially said, "so what!" Yet we have rules regarding the size of the openings within a brass deflector. I don't understand.

Recently, there was a rifle ad on the Bullseye list. A poster casually mentioned how was this related to BE and he was quickly vilified by a number of list members whom I know and respect. Would then posting sales of shotguns be permissible as well? I don't understand the treatment to the poster who was chastised.

We had a discussion on dry, cracking skin which was of particular interest to me. When I have the time to shoot frequently, the skin of my hands and fingers crack and bleed to such a point that I may be wiping blood off my rounds as I load them into the magazines. Many tips posted were helpful. This thread generated much interest until a couple of well respected list members felt it was more important to post that this was a nonsense topic rather than using the delete button. I don't understand.

Most recently, the topic of the box drew much interest and discussions. Although this was the first time in all the years I've been shooting that this subject came to light, I was interested with how others felt. Emotions dictated responses rather than logic. As experienced of a shooter that I am, I've crossed fired, forgot to remove the empty magazine from the pistol during cease-fire, fired an early and late round during sustained fire. I'm in good health and have no dissabllities, yet I've taken missteps on occasions on stairs in which I've stepped onto for years. Had this discussion gone farther, I would have been curious how these same posters who saw nothing wrong with the box draw the line with how tall the box, how wide the box, and how short the shooter may be. Regulating would be ridiculous. Yet, this was an interesting new topic and I could not comprehend boxes used at the national matches. When the dust settles, I would like to hear from junior coaches and their experience with boxes and platforms for their younger and shorter juniors.

When I joined the list in 2004, a gunsmith who rarely posts now, wrote that there were probably no topics which have not been discussed time and time again. When something new comes up and many join in, a few get huffy and posts derogatory comments rather than use the delete button. I just don't understand.

Who are we? Please don't be offended. I've taken care of many, many shooters in my office for their eyecare needs and curiously, my staff has noted that PPC shooters, cowboy action shooters, rifle shooters, and even one archer have a more congenial disposition. Again, who are we, I just don't understand.

Norman

Norman,

My compliments, you hit the nail right on the head.  That is the reason I rarely make any public statements on the list any more.  I'll answer a question to the person that posted it.  And you're right, the delete keys works very well as do filters to stop mail you don't want to receive.

We are who everyone is on every forum on the internet, a group of people with different opinions on a variety of subjects.  I have been involved in online forums going all the way back to the "bulletin boards" of the early 80s.  Problems like this have existed since then and on every subject that has ever been discussed.

Myself, I don't mind the banter - I can choose to read it or delete it.  I don't understand why people complain it "fills up their email box" though.  I belong to dozens of forums and I don't configure any of them to email me the posts.  Rather, I visit the forum and read the subject lines and if I am interested I read the whole post.  If it is a "bash fest", sometimes it is fun to read through it, sometimes it is just "stupidity in words" and I pass by it.  My email box never fills up and I don't even have to press the delete button.

I don't think public forums like this will ever be without arguments.  After a while you learn who's opinion you can trust, and who's you can't.  There will always be people that think they are smarter than they are and will argue a point to death.  There will also be people that want to share their wisdom and will do so till someone bashes them and chases them away.

Thank you for the words of wisdom Norman. Hopefully some folks will understand and get us back to what this sport is about.

How did the skin care discussion turn out? Fall is here along with the cooler weather, soon I will have cracking skin myself!
