Just following up to my Carpal Tunnel journey.

Still have issues when shooting a lot requiring more Advil than I would like but normal shooting schedule is almost back to where it was before my ailment. Still doing the stretching exercises below before getting on the computer or shooting. No surgery to date, no more topical ointments etc.

Good news:

Just received my expert card for indoor.

Just wrapped up my indoor 22 league and shot a (by far) personal best average of 571 Master scores. During my wrist issues I was shooting averages in 540 and 555. What a difference.

MRI for my rotator Cuff issues next week, the saga of getting old continues but making great progress on every front.

Ongoing challenges:

Slab side strength and stability I had before the melt down.

Shoulder pain but manageable

Brain and trigger control.

I had the numbness, cold fingers, aching, and my shooting was going downhill fast. At the Mid-Winter matches in PHX this year my wrist totally melted down so when I got home I made the appointment. My doctor said I was a candidate for surgery also.

I asked if there were any alternatives I could try first, she recommended some anti-inflammatory topical prescription medicine (Pennsaid?), ice, and Advil. Also to try some stretching exercises. (The original ointment med is in short supply, the liquid Pennsaid is more expensive and not covered by my insurance. Usually used for knees but the same active ingredients. I did not want to wait so I paid the $150 for the small bottle and glad I did.)

I found this web site and tried the exercises for one week. Between the meds and stretching my symptoms were under control, after a month I feel that I am completely healed. I only used the ointment for 3 weeks.

I recommend anyone using a mouse or shooting pistols to do this every so often as a preventative. 30 second is all it takes.

I don’t want to sound like a commercial but I had such great results I found a complete CD that has all kinds of wrist Yoga stretching exercises (expensive for a CD but much cheaper than the surgery) at www.carpaltunnelinstitute.org that I use a couple times a year. (I wish they made a CD for the elbow.)

The secret was to get the inflammation shut down with the meds and then the exercises. Now if I feel it coming on using the mouse I will stop and do my quick exercise and it goes away. My 3 week recovery was shorter than any surgery. I hope this works for you.

“Here are some exercises intended to help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. Remember doing a quick five minute exercise warm-up before starting work, just as runners stretch before a run, can help prevent work-related injuries.

Extend and stretch both wrists and fingers acutely as if they are in a hand-stand position. Hold for a count of 5.

Straighten both wrists and relax fingers.

Make a tight fist with both hands.

Then bend both wrists down while keeping the fist. Hold for a count of 5.

Straighten both wrists and relax fingers, for a count of 5.

The exercise should be repeated 10 times.
Then let your arms hang loosely at the side and shake them for a few seconds.

Jack,

I have had the same problem for years.  I had a very difficult time reaching a 2500 score.  After almost a decade of pain and numbness I finally had the surgery done, on both hands.  Dr. Aird here in Tampa, FL did the work.  He is a great doctor!  I was scared to have the surgery done.  I even cancelled it once but finally had the work completed.

I had the first surgery done in mid-October, left hand was done on Dec. 17th.  I had not fired a match since and only did minor practicing.  I finally shot a match on May 20th.  I fired a 2532-64X, a personal best.  Two weeks later I fired a 2518-56X.  Keep in mind, my highest score to that point had only been a 2506 and I had struggled to get that score.  My hands feel great and my shooting has improved, A LOT!

Get a good Dr. and get it done.

Good Luck,

Stephen
