Hi Guys,
I won't be able to make the Weds meeting , but seeing if anyone has any interest in taking a shot at the albacore which have started biting.  I've got a line on a couple boats (basstub & Huli-cat) but they need 10 people minimum to do the trip.  These trips are a bit long (leave 3am return 8pm) and cost about $300.  I've never done it, but willing to give it a go probably next week if the bite keeps up.  Let me know if there is any interest...

I can't make the meeting either but am definitely interested in the range day and fishing!
I don't know if I can do next week (and a little wary of the 3am start) but Brook - let me know if you end up going!
If that does/doesn't work out, I'd also love to plan another rockfish/lingcod or salmon trip.

Also, I will check in with my contact for dove hunting - who's interested? Sometime in early September, one day, just south of Fresno.

This is interesting. I never fished for something that big. What would
we need to supply?

How big is a Albacore Tuna? Can you just fillet the thing?

Hi Tammy,
Yes, the 3 am start intimidates me a bit also...one alternative is try for a trip out of Ft. Bragg, they are generally shorter and cost about half as much, but it is all the way up there and the effort of the boats up there has been less than what it is here, from my limited experience with the Bragg fleet...The salmon this year have been great, quality fish , they should continue to get even bigger as the season winds down.

Let me know what you got going for dove opener...Myself and Luke are totally in if you have a property...I have a friend in Winters that is supposed to be scouting for me, but the lack of water this year and the fact that the opener is on Sunday of Labor day weekend makes me want to try to avoid public land if at all possible.

Keep me in the loop and I will let you know on the albies or next time I head out for Salmon...

Hey Chuck,
It is a bit of a learning curve for me too...supposedly the two ways they are getting them is either trolling with a zucchini or mexican flag zuker broomtail or casting when they get close with live live bait or swimbait or some combo of the methods.  I have some poles, reels and lures , but I'm sure for the price of the trip it should include all the gear.
Supposedly it can be total anarchy when you get into them where 4 or 5 fish can get hooked up at the same time...the fish are strong and it is pretty challenging getting them in, but the good thing is that there is no limit as I'm aware, but you really need to be aggressive/proactive when fishing for them (can't just sit back and hope they bite your line).
In any event I'm going to give it a go if the weather, fish and my work schedule allow...I'm looking it more as a learning experience on the first go round.

These are fish a friend of my-coworker got on Monday.

I'm also interested in salmon fishing, for sure.  Supposedly, Roger Thomas (Captain and owner of the Salty Lady out of Sausalito) called this salmon season one of his top 5 in his 50 years on the water.  So if you are inclined, make sure you get out soon - now is the time the big fish stack up outside the gate.

I plan on going sometime next week, before Friday, assuming the weather lays down a bit.  Let me know if anyone is interested.

Also, I believe I've found a sheep ranch that would work for field dressing a lamb.  This one is located in Esparto, which is about 15 minutes north of Winters.  So probably 90 minutes from SF.  Sound off if you are interested in a field dressing excercise on a lamb or two; once we get a few people we can start talking about dates.

Definitely interested.  Albacore is awesome.  Makes incredible sashimi, done right.   let me know.

Theres a lot of threads on here going on.  Would a private facebook group be a better way to do this with respect to managing communications?

Cheers,

I would be in for the field dressing if you need someone to teach the class.

Interested in salmon.  I would love to go! What day are you thinking? And how much would it be? Also interested in field dressing class.

I have a friend that takes a boat out of Berkeley that has always found fish.  We limited out on stripers a few weeks ago.  He has several salmon trips planned.  If you want I will find out the cost/time/etc.

Hi Bob-

Yes, that would be great.  I'd be happy to go on your friend's boat.

If anyone is interested, I plan on going salmon fishing Tuesday or Wednesday of next week (8/20 or 8/21).  I plan on choosing whichever day has the calmest weather.  I live in SF, so I usually go out of Sausalito on the Salty Lady.  Cost is $110, I believe, and an additional $10 for rod rental.  Tackle is provided, but if we are trolling, each lead weight (which are released and drop to the bottom when you get a hard strike) is $5.  I also usually tip $10-$20 for the crew.

If any of you are interested in going Tuesday or Wednesday, let me know!  Thursday could possibly work as well.

Here are the details:

Boat Happy Hooker, Berkeley Marina, Check-in on the boat at 5:30am, boat leaves at 6:00am. If you need a rod and reel we rent on boat for 10 dollars for the day. Cost 100 dollars, tackle sold on boat. Two leaders and two weights is five dollars. If you want to get in on the jackpot, largest fish of the day, it is 5 dollars. Bring your own food and drink. Ok to bring Beer etc. on the trip. Boat is right behind the bait shop across from free parking lot. Large dirt parking lot on the left side of the street when you drive into the Marina. If you decide on a date the owner needs a credit card number and phone number for a deposit. This helps us with last minute cancellations. We only run with ten or more. Right now the Salmon fishing is slow one day good the next, they are coming in to spawn so they all don't come through at the same time. If the Salmon don't bite we fish for Rockfish and lingcod, and sometimes Halibut. I hope this helps with your questions. We normally fish until 2 or 3 depending where we are up the coast. I like to get in around 4 or 4:30.

Bob

Fred - I can't make it this Tues/Wed, but please let me know if you go again!
Brook - Let us know how it goes if you go out for albacore.
Robert - Thanks for the info on the Happy Hooker (love the name, btw. though you gotta make sure people know you're going fishing...).

I am really pretty busy but would like to plan on a trip in the fall - maybe October?
We should talk about dates and interest at one of our future events!
