This is last second, but if anyone is interested, I'm going to drive
up to the 6-7000 acre Cedar Roughs BLM land on the western side of
Lake Berryessa tomorrow morning (or I could possibly do Sunday if
someone really wants to go). I'm mainly looking for small game before
the season ends, and doing a little early turkey scouting, but I'm
interested to find out what critters live in there. I hear it's the
last place in Napa County with a lot of black bears.

John,

Can't make it this weekend. Arlen and I are heading out for hogs tomorrow morning but I will be interested to hear what you see. Look for tracks around water sources.

Brief report on Cedar Roughs:

I think this place has a lot of potential as a good public land
opportunity. I didn't see another person all day, and I saw plenty of
deer tracks (no pig tracks). I also heard some turkeys. I saw many
geese and ducks fly overhead, but I don't know if they ever stop at
the creek here. This place is really hard to access, because you have
to cross a 50 foot-wide creek that is really gushing at the moment,
and there are no good places to cross. DFG has strung a rope across
to give you something to hold on to at one point, but all of the
boulders to stand on are well underwater right now. I'll definitely
return to try this place again, especially for deer season.

Thanks for the report John! I've been eyeing that area for a little
while now, and its great to hear that it doesn't seem to receive much
pressure. For those that are interested in the region, I spent a day
a couple of weekends ago looking for quail in the Rector Wildlife Area
(just north of Napa, off Silverado Trail) Its small, only a few
hundred acres, but I managed to find a couple of coveys. The place is
covered in deer tracks though...and I'm hoping to go scout it for
turkey soon. Its not hard to access, which probably means it sees a
fair number of people...but it any case it seems like a good spot for
someone with a limited amount of time, and it makes for a really
pretty hike.

For what its worth, DFG apparently held a public draw pig hunt on
private land near Lake Berryessa in December and there were a few
bagged...does anyone have any more scouting reports in the Berryessa/
Putah Creek area?

Hi Mike,

When you visited Rector, did you park in the little fenced in area
right next to the vehicle repair yard? I drove by, but there were so
many houses I wasn't sure where the public land began and private land
ended. Great to hear there is quail - I may have to check it out
again.

Right before you get to the repair yard on the right hand side
(heading north) there's a little turnout and a dirt area in front of a
chain link fence. If you park there, you'll see a trail off to your
right that heads up into the WA. Its definitely not easy to pick
out...I actually went into the DFG office, which is just up the road,
and asked them.

Next time I'm up that way, I'll try and get a GPS fix.

The trail is pretty well worn, which makes me think the area sees some
non-hunting traffic as well...

John, when you went into Cedar Roughs, did you use waders to get
across the creek? Or did you just tough it out with wet boots? I'm
tempted to go check it out this weekend...

Mike,

I saw that turnout - thanks for confirming that's the parking spot.

As far as Cedar Roughs - I had no idea the creek was going to be so
full, so I was completely unprepared with footwear. Luckily, I
usually bring lots of socks. I crossed the stream in just a pair of
socks after tying my boots to my pack, and tried not to think about
how cold it was. On the other side, I put on dry socks and continued
on my way after warming up a bit. I do NOT recommend this tactic.
Next time I will bring rubber knee boots to cross the creek and then
hide them under a bush or something until I leave.

Also, you should know that there are signs posted at the entrance "no
firearms" and "no hunting." These are from the Bureau of Reclamation,
which oversees a sliver of territory right by the road before you get
to the DFG and BLM land (think we have too many gov't agencies?).
Anyway, you can either just hike in with no gun, or if you want to
actually hunt you need a signed pass from Bureau of Reclamation to
carry a firearm across their land. You can get it from these guys
(http://www.usbr.gov/mp/ccao/berryessa/contact.html) either in person
at their office in Napa or by faxing your hunting license and drivers
license over, and having them fax the pass back to you. That's what I
did. The pass is free. Just another reason there aren't a lot of
hunters out there.
