Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to inform you about a vocabulary learning tool online
which may interest your students. The web site freerice.com is an
initiative that connects learning to humanitarian work. The screen
shows a word and 4 choices of (mis)matching words. If the user clicks
the correct choice, the web site's advertisers donate 10 grains of
rice to to the United Nations World Food Program. Although 10 grains
is a trifle, just yesterday users "won" 201 Million grains.
The level of difficulty of the words that are displayed depends on
your previous choices. The level is adaptive, just like in tests such
as GRE. As a matter of fact, the site can serve as a good preparation
to students of yours who would like to take the GRE. Besides, the site
offers a real, authentic motivation to learn.
