Hello, LALSA Members:

LALSA will elect members of the 2011-2012 Executive Board on March 10,
beginning at 4:00PM in Room 820.  The election will coincide with our
Ice Cream Social.  As if ice cream and the company of your fellow
members were not sufficient incentive to attend, we would like to
remind you that voting offers you the important opportunity to select
our group's leaders based on their vision for the group.

Please take a moment to read the explanation of The Election Process
and the responsibilities associated with The Executive Board Positions
detailed below.  Among other policies, note that only LALSA members
present at the election meeting may run for a position and only
members present at the election meeting may vote.  Because it has been
difficult to schedule the meeting, the Board has set the time of the
election but will consider re-scheduling in the event of conflicts
that substantially impact turnout.

Thus, you must e-mail frances...@gmail.com AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if:
1) you intend to run for a board position; and/or 2) if you would like
to participate in the process as a voter or a candidate, but cannot
attend the meeting as currently scheduled.

Thank you,
Francesca

The Election Process
The election process has three stages:  nominations, speeches, and voting.

Nominations and Candidacy:  The nomination process will be informal:
any LALSA member present at the election meeting may nominate himself
or herself to run for any position.  That is, candidates will be
"self-selected."  Any LALSA member present at the meeting may run for
any position, and ONLY those present at the meeting may run.  A
candidate may run for multiple board positions, but may hold only one
position.  For example, if Candidates A, B, and C each announce their
candidacy for both President and Secretary and A wins the vote for
President, there are no circumstances under which A may serve as both
President and Secretary.  In this example, however, B and C may remain
in the running for Secretary having been elected to no other position.

Speeches:  Each candidate must speak at the meeting about his or her
1) qualifications for the position; 2) plans for LALSA for next year;
and 3) any anticipated commitments other than LALSA, such as journal
membership, clinic work, and the like.

Voting:  Any LALSA member present at the meeting during the election
for a position may vote in an election for that position, and ONLY
LALSA members present at the meeting may vote in the election.  Those
present at the meeting will vote for President, External Vice
President, Internal Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and
Historian, in that order.  Each candidate for President will give his
or her speech for President.  All members present will vote for
President or abstain.  Our current President, Jessica, will collect
all ballots, leave the room, and count ballots in the hall.  She then
will announce the winner for President, once that has been determined.
The President-elect will become ineligible to run for another board
position.  Next, each eligible candidate running for External Vice
President will speak, members will vote, and the President will
announce a winner.  The process will continue until members elect each
member of the 2011-2012 Executive Board.

Anyone absent from the room during the speeches and/or vote for a
particular position may not run or vote for that position.  Again, one
must be present to run and to vote.  For example, a member arriving to
the meeting after the vote for President may not ask that the speeches
or vote be redone in order to run for that position nor may he or she
ask that the vote be re-counted so his or her vote may be considered.
The late-comer may, however, run or vote in the election for any
position for which the speech and voting process has not begun.

No candidates may count ballots.  Any member running for any position
may not count ballots for any position, even those positions for which
he or she has not or will not run.
