Towhom it may concern. We have Backup exec 20 and it was working fine and completely licensed until December 2019. But now Veritas requires that we renew the license yearly. I went to Vertitas licensing and downloaded another license and then followed the procedure outlined in this web site to remove the existing license and then re-add in the new license. -and-how-tos/how-to-renew-your-backup-exec-licensing
However, yesterday our backups stopped since apparently the license I installed on November 20, 2019 didn't work and the server was in Trial mode, which ran out yesterday. We are a small non profit and purchased the license through
techsoup.org, so we got a NFR perpetual license, which in theory should be good forever.
After doing the procedure again last night, when I go to license, I enter the new license which is valid from yesterday until 2021, and then go through the procedure, however, when it says which product to apply the license to, there is nothing showing. After installing the license, when I go to Installation and Licensing --> License Information, it says "Your trial period has expired".
When I go to Installation and LIcensing --> License Contract Information, the screen is blank. Nothing is showing.
I fixed it myself by uninstalling and then reinstalling the entire Backup Exec system. This is a atrosity that I'm going to have to reinstall the backup system every time I renew the license year to year. Going to a yearly renewal of the license is one of the most stupid things I've seen from Veritas especially since it forces clients to have to reinstall to fix their system to apply the license. I hope you fix this in later releases of the product and go back to a perpetual license.
I'm doing overall upgrade planning on our infrastructure and saw SQL Server 2014 SP3 will get out of mainstream support in july 2019 identified which systems still run this version, Backup Exec server being one of them. Even if the extended maintenance support continues, MS will definitely limit their efforts for 2014 in favour of 2016 and newer. Thus I'd like to get all our DB instances upgraded in time - where possible to the same versions on the whole infastructure so that we have to keep an eye on less software version to keep patched and maintained.
The BE 20.3 admin guide mentions SQL Server 2014 Express SP2 as minmum requirement, however I haven't found an indication what newer versions of SQL Server (Express) are supported for the BKUPEXEC instance.
Ideally I'd like to upgrade to SQL Server 2017, then again if Veritas doesn't support new SQL Server for the BKUPEXEC instance it wouldn't be worth the effort. Hence my question about what versions are actually supported by Veritas in this case - and where I can find about.
Refer Backup Exec software compatibility list . Check the backup exec database repository section under Backup Exec Feature specific compatibility. This lists all supported SQL version on which BE can host its database.
Recently had a hung backup that I cleared by restarting the BE services throught the console. Immediatly after console comes up with a login prompt. When I put in credentials I get error: "Cannot connect to . You must use the same version of backup exec server and the backup exec administration console."
back in the day, i was a veritas reseller. i've had an nfr copy of backup exec 12.5 that i've been using since around 2010. it's worked fine through windows server 2019, performing upgrade over upgrade since i got it..
so i figured i would just go back to 2019, even though it was necessary to do a clean install. backup exec does the same thing, opens and then closes. don't know why it worked after upgrading from server 2016 to 2019, but it won't work now.
I am running a trial version of backup exec 2010 and trying to imitate the scenario that our comapny want to use backup exec for, the original scenario is one backup server at the company talk to another one outside the company to backup changes, this way we will have Disaster recovery implemented. In my lab, I installed backup Exec in two servers one belong to the our domain and the other to Workgroup, and what i want to accomplish is trying to make them communicate by IP address, can you help with any ideas how to do that, I have the administration guide but it's a couple thousand pages and no trace for the word replication.
before this happened, I used a server where I had configured backup exec 15, but it was also encrypted including the application. I installed a new server and backup exec and I want to add the tapes to recover the backups from the old server. Someone can help me?
Yesterday there was a ransomware attack on my AD server and other servers in network including my veritas backup exec server. Fortunately on veritas server backup partition was not infected but veritas back exec software is corrupted. When i try on open backup exec it says cant find the file path. My question is:
Licensing for Backup Exec has been consolidated into three editions: Bronze, Silver and Gold and can be licensed as either Perpetual or Subscription. Custom Edition ( la carte licensing) is still available as Perpetual for both new and renewing customers. All existing Backup Exec customers using la carte, V-Ray, Capacity or Capacity Lite editions with current maintenance can access the features included in Backup Exec 20.3 and can add to existing entitlements using their current model and continue to renew maintenance based on the edition in use. Customers with existing editions and the older licensing models can cross-grade to Bronze, Silver or Gold editions to take advantage of the greater usage flexibility, ease of maintaining a single license, and cost savings.
A perpetual license allows customers to use a specific version of a given software program indefinitely with payment of a single fee. With perpetual licensing, customers pay an upfront charge for the software license as well as a limited maintenance period during which additional support options are included. After the support period ends, customers have the option of continuing to use the current version of the software without additional support or paying additional fees for support and upgrades.
A subscription or term-based license allows customers to license the product during a specified period of time (either 12, 24 or 36 months); maintenance is included in the price. During the term of the subscription, customers have the right to use the product, install product updates, and receive technical support. Customers do not own the license, but they will have all the entitlements of ownership as long as they are subscribers. At the end of the term, customers can renew the subscription to continue using the product. If subscription is not renewed, customers lose the right to continue to use the product for backups, restores are allowed.
The Backup Exec Bronze, Silver and Gold offerings include unlimited deployment of the Backup Exec server, options and agents, as long as the number of front-end terabytes (FETB) of data being protected does not exceed the number of terabytes specified by your license, with a minimum of 1TB license per Backup Exec server. You may purchase licenses for as many TB as you need based on the amount of data that needs to be protected. Download the Veritas Capacity Assessment Tool to calculate the amount of data, in TB, on the servers in an environment to provide information about the number of licenses needed to protect these servers. Discounts on perpetual and subscription capacity-based offerings are available for higher data volumes. Tier discounts will be applied at the time of transaction on individual order line quantity. The quantity tiers are:
Backup Exec allows you to purchase licenses for the total number of front-end terabytes (FETB) needed and allocate different capacity licensing to different Backup Exec servers, including those on different sites.
For example, you can purchase a license for 12 FETB and distribute or allocate across multiple servers, such as 4 TB to Server A and 3 TB each to Servers B and C and 2 TB to Server D. In this example there would be 12 TB available and 12 TB allocated among 4 servers. To add capacity to any of these servers, the new license must be the same Bronze/Silver/Gold edition as the existing license. In this example if 2 more TB were purchased, there would be 14 TB available and 12 TB allocated. Servers with allocated licensing do not have to be centrally managed.
Backup Exec 21.0 introduces instance meter that allows you to purchase licenses based on the number of instances that you want to protect. When licensed on instance basis, you must purchase instances in groups of 10. An instance is defined as a protected Windows, Linux, Unix or NAS instance, such as a virtual machine, a cloud computing instance or a physical system in the datacenter.
Licenses on instance basis can be allocated across multiple Backup Exec Servers with a minimum of 1 instance per Backup Exec Server. Bronze, Silver or Gold Instance Edition cannot be combined with Custom Edition ( la Carte), V-Ray Edition, Bronze, Silver or Gold FETB Edition, and cannot be mixed perpetual and subscription.
V-Ray Edition protects virtual environments only. V-Ray licenses are sold per CPU socket of the hypervisor host and allow you to protect all the guests and supported applications and databases running on that hypervisor. V- Ray Edition is available as perpetual. V-Ray Edition can be mixed with select Custom Edition (a la Carte) licenses to add on features that are not included in the V-Ray Edition and to extend protection to physical environments.
The Custom Edition allows you to purchase Backup Exec by individual options and agents to meet your backup needs. Specific agents and features are licensed as separately priced items selected from a menu ( la Carte). Each agent or feature in Custom Edition must be licensed for specific use per server.
The Capacity Lite and Capacity Editions offered a convenient way for customers to obtain all product features in a single license, based on the amount of Front-end Terabyte. V-Ray Edition protects virtual environments only. These editions apply to existing customers extending or renewing their existing Backup Exec Edition licenses.
