I recently downloaded WinBUGS (WinBUGS14.exe) from the main WinBUGS
site, upgraded to version 1.4.3 (patch), added the unrestricted access
key(I checked the keys file and it shows todays date), downloaded the
Excel GUI for Win BUGS (WinBUGSXLA50), and am trying to use the
WinBUGSXLA50 program.

1) When I run WinBUGS, I get the following warning message: "This
copy of WinBUGS expired on Wednesday,
June 30, 2004." I check the WinBUGS.exe file that was
downloaded on my computer and it shows modified
11/21/01. Is this the correct (most recent) application
file?

I already emailed "the WinBUGS site" regarding this.

2) When I run WinBUGS I get the following error message:
"fmBUGSHGLMcmOK path/file access error"

Is this a WinBUGS error or a WinBUGSXLA50 error? If it is a
WinBugs error, why am I getting this error?

I already emailed "the WinBUGS site" regarding this.

3) After I highlight cells F2:F3, TRT and *, in the Predictions
range and click ok in the Predictions and Contrasts
window, I get the following error message:"Subscript out of
range."

Any ideas what the problem is?

4) After I click on Run WinBUGS at the bottom of the Prior
Distributions form, I get the following message:

"WinBUGSNodeStats not found. Could be due to Metropolis adapting
phase. Try increasing Burn-In to at least 400."

Any ideas what the problem is?

5) Can I run WinBUGSXLA50 if I VPN (remote desktop) to a
computer having all of the required programs
installed? I tried, but when I click on the Bayesian Model
icon, nothng happens.

( I teach a course on Bayesian Statistics at the University of
the Sciences (Philadelphia,PA) and am thinking about requiring your
book for the class. )

I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Hi Carl,

I can provide two observations immediately.

For item #3: I had this happen the first time I tried this example. I had
opened the spreadsheet and started working on the example before I realized
I need the F2:F3 cells arranged as indicated in the text. (The spreadsheet
- as you know - does not originally have the text filled in). So I exited
BugsXLA and then filled in the cells in the Excel spreadsheet with TRT and
*and then saved and closed Excel. Then I restarted Excel and BugsXLA Add-in
and the example worked without the error you are getting. Without doing
further investigation, I assumed that once the Add-in starts running, it
does recognize changes to the spreadsheet that was open when the Add-in
first started.

For the VPN question #5 (and perhaps the other questions concerning WinBUGS
errors): I have found that I cannot call WinBUGS from BugsXLA when working
on files that are NOT on my local hard disk. I have a simple home network.
When I try to work on spreadsheet files stored on a network drive, WinBugs
returns various errors - in particular I have received your #4 example
error. Try placing your Excel files on your local drive and using a local
folder for all your data files. As well, I only use WinBugs and Excel on my
local machine.

As well, I assume - if you are using WinBUGS on a 64-bit processor, that you
followed the instructions from the WinBUGS project site: " If installing on
a 64-bit machine, you should download a zipped version of the whole file
structure and unzip it into Program Files or wherever you want it. "

As to item #1 - I notice you say you are checking the WinBUGS .exe file. To
verify the successful install of the "immortal" key need to:

"Check the date of the file c:\Program Files\WinBUGS14\Bugs\Code\Keys.ocf
(or wherever you have installed WinBUGS 1.4). If it shows the current date
and time then the upgrade has been successfully installed."

Let the Group know how you are doing on this! I really think Phil's book is
great and I think it would be great to have this book plus a tutor taking me
through it! Your students will be fortunate indeed.

Regards,

George

I am trying to run a bayesian analysis on my dataset and everytime I select a model winbugs immediately tells me that the version I downloaded has expired in 2004 and then the whole program shutsdown.  I installed the update patch, so I am confused why it's doing this.  What am I doing wrong and how do I upload it so it doesn't crash?  Lastly, how do I load excel data into Winbugs?  Please respond at your earliest convenience.
