Hi All,
I had a phone call with Lindsey last Friday. She is going to be talking with Nick today and is supposed to get back to me.

Lisa and Casey,
Fantastic! I am glad Lisa took the lead to move on the discussion I was having with Tom and her last week about how to get more “clients” in the door. And great that Casey is working his connection with Nick and Lindsay who already know us. To boil down the idea again: Utilize the Space and Resources in our “science space”/lab to bring some sustainable revenues to BUGSS by offering very early stage innovators a very (low priced) place to do their thing. Pricing and product/service will need to be better defined, but I think if we connect with the other spaces and start talking to their screened out “clients” we’ll start to get a sense of our own offering.
See everyone tomorrow.

Casey, thanks for being willing to reach out to IMET. Below is my email to my contact at the Sinai incubator-it explains more my idea of our serving as a “pre-incubator” so that we can collaborate with, rather than compete with, current incubator spaces. Might be relevant for IMET as well.

Subject: Bioincubator
Hi Mike,
Hope things are well and that you’re having a good and relaxing summer!
I’m writing today to ask for a little help and advice. I may have mentioned that I’m on the Board for a community lab, Baltimore Underground Science Space. Among other activities, we host members who pay a monthly fee to access our lab space to perform their own experiments. In the past, we’ve had a few members who have had commercial ideas in the very early stages and have used our space and equipment to perform pilot experiments before moving on to a larger incubator (for example, the one downtown at IMET).
We’d like to expand in this area and recruit more bio-entrepreneurs, but we know that there are already several incubator spaces in the city and region. I was hoping that you could give me a sense, based on your experience with the Sinai incubator, whether there is still a strong demand for lab space? We’re thinking not so much of directly competing with the current bioincubators, but as serving instead as a pre-incubator for those people who have an idea but perhaps not the capital to equip their own lab and rent space in a larger incubator. Ideally, we’d love to partner with current incubators like yours at Sinai so that people who are not ready to have their own space in an incubator could first become a member at our lab and perform initial experiments using our equipment and then move on to a regular incubator space. In your experience, are there a group of people who might fit into this category?
Thanks for any help or insight. I’m happy to discuss further on the phone or in person at your incubator or at our lab space. As I mentioned, we’d be very interested in collaborating with other incubators to create a pipeline for entrepreneurs from our lab to yours.
Best regards,
Lisa

All,
I have a relationship with the Harbor Launch incubator, specifically with Lindsay D'Ambrosio, the manager of the incubator and Nick Hammond, Assistant director at IMET. The time is right for some follow-up calls with them.
I’ll see if I can get in touch before our next strategy meeting,

Here’s what’s in my mind and offer for your consideration:
- Using Google Ad Words for nonprofits ( https://www.wholewhale.com/tips/5-tips-using-google-adwords-grant-nonprofits/ )
- Using Facebook better --- some ideas like this https://www.newmediacampaigns.com/blog/10-common-mistakes-non-profit-organizations-make-with-facebook-pages and trying out Facebook ads for nonprofits
- Better presentation/better wordsmithing and more consistent communication of our value proposition for each and everything we offer from being a volunteer to being a space for entrepreneur R+D early stage projects….why BUGSS? What do you get for your participation, time, money spent? It’s has to be a persistent message from the moment you open our webpage, walk in our door, look us up on Facebook etc.
- Banner/signage on building, fence or wherever we are allowed which can be seen from street. We badly need identity and location recognition. Participate in Canton, Highlandtown, local events, coffee spaces, restaurants, notice boards, library, etc. Have a “BUGSS at Large campaign” from Hopkins spaces down to Boston Street.
- We have SalesForce CRM now. We need to institute optimized use of this software for selling. All users should be logging all types of contacts into the database.
- Develop the “how to monetize” what we’ve been offering on open source (or nearly free) basis. If it’s sponsorships; what’s the real value which would make that sponsor give to us and not to other organizations.
- Connect with ETC, IMET incubator (harbor launch), OPENWORKS and other tech start up spaces to see if they have interacted with potential clients for our space….for example, maybe clients didn’t fit or couldn’t afford to be at IMET, but BUGSS could be the right fit. Network with other space for clients for BUGSS. Mine places like Creative Alliance for potential clients.
I hope some of this is useful/resonates and fits into strategic planning meetings.
