Anthony @ LISC is working on an initiative -- they did a survey and got about 150 respondents. They have hired a consulting firm that is looking at coworking facilities in other regions.

This is what he has in mind -- it's what Toronto has, it's quite rad: http://socialinnovation.ca/

What would be great is a building with like a cafe and microbrewery (flying bison public brewery bar?!) on ground floor, coworking on another floor, and offices on above floors [for other tech companies].

I don't know what I'd pay, but typically there are day passes [$20-$35] or permanent monthly passes [with a perm desk, or roaming desk] in other cities that tend to range from $150-$250/month. Shared facilities [restrooms, printers, light tech support possibly, kitchen].

These are just my thoughts/opinions.

I second question I would ask in regards to this topic would be what would people look to pay monthly or ala carte to use a collective space. There are many affordable buildings in the city and a mixed used building that possibly retail, apartment, and a group work space could work if the numbers were there.

Brian,

Yes, I think a lot of us have this same problem. Until someone steps up to the plate with a coworking solution, we're a bit stuck. For now, I do know the 'LEASE IT' Plaza Group -- they have various places that you can rent a one-room office each month, which includes access to their conference rooms.

I *think* they can get as low as $295/month

So I have this problem that I thought I'd throw out to this group in
between meetings:

I own a small Drupal dev firm (Fending Group), and the contractors I
employ live in several different cities. My clients are in different
cities, too. Home office is a slam-dunk and I love it.

Occasionally, I need to meet with local folks. Mostly, trying to find
& develop contractors for my firm. And my remote customers would like
to - apparently - come to ME sometimes. Reducing my travel schedule
would be, well, a good thing. Oh, and I run a user group ~ finding an
evening location for that is a struggle.

So I'm looking for not just a flexible co-working space, which would
be great if it existed, but also a pretty awesome conference room I
could book to host out-of-towners (both my contractors and clients,
for large projects). I really need to figure this out both near- and
long-term, so what's everybody's input?

Well, holy crap. That is awesome, Steve. I also wonder what I'm going
to do while Valhalla is under construction, but this initiative puts
my long-term mind (a bit) at ease. It seems that the discussion is
turned more to the nearer-term Co-working Collective (the rest of
2010, maybe into early 2011 assuming that this will take a while to
Get Done). To be honest, I would MUCH rather have a managed space like
the one envisioned, and having "anchor businesses" is very, very
smart.

But my needs are pretty simple and are, well, *current* business
needs. Finding a mixed use space in the interim may just be my
struggle, but it's one that I'd much rather assume is shared with
others until the future state you referenced is a reality. As with all
things: collaboration is for now, planning is for the future.

I will continue the discussion w Anthony when he's back in town (just
got the autoreply) and post back my direction as it changes. In the
mean time, anybody who wants to discuss can do so here, call me at
work (716 202 8482), or find me at at Open Coffee every Tuesday
morning.

I sat with Anthony Armstrong from LISC after OpenCoffee this week and
we had a good chat about his coworking project. It seems that it's
going to start moving forward to something more concrete in the Fall
and start to turn into a "real thing" in early 2011. I can't thank you
enough for the contact, Steve!

The result is that I'm totally excited. He's really trying to build
this Valhalla that we've been talking over in mixed circles, and I'm
100% supportive of his vision. For my Summer and Fall requirements,
I'm going to "seek temporary shelter" both downtown and nearer to me.
Beyond that, I plan to (a) invest time & energy in the LISC-sponsored
venture and then use it or, failing that, (b) find my fellow
socialists and approach developers about working with an LLC devoted
to this cause.

This thread on Hacker News details a web dev firm that's opening up their extra space on the Jersey Shore to coworking. They post to Hacker News, and they get all kinds of advice--and common sense complaints that any project has to deal with.
