Trying to decide how many kids' books we need to bring for our nine months there.  My husband learned on his flight last night that the carry-on's are weight too, which we weren't expecting.

Is there a library in Budapest that stocks kids' books in English?

If not, is there a bookstore that sells kids' (5-8 y/o) books in English?

Thanks!

LIbby

I've joined but never been to the Central Library - their website says they have English language children's books. You can get a few english language kids books in Libri and Alexandra bookstores but the most from Bestsellers on October 6 in centre of town. You can buy Usborne books from Barbara Petri

Hi Libby,

If you have kids going to an international/English school, they will probably have a library with English books, otherwise I haven't had any luck finding any non-school related English libraries. I hadn't heard that there are English kids books in the Central Library but the prospect of trying to sign up for a card when I'm sure the whole process is in Hungarian seems quite daunting...

Recently I've pretty much ended up doing a casual book swap with other expat mothers. Probably there are many people interested in getting cheap English books, so maybe I'll try to organise something more official, perhaps at the Friday playgroups?

If you're thinking of buying books then online, especially Book Depository, is probably your best bet for price and variety, I've ordered a few things from them and they seem to arrive without issue.

Hope that helps!

Best wishes,
Clara

Clara, it wasn't too hard to get a library card, honestly and I speak no Hungarian! But the day I joined it was closed :-D

Thank you all, great idea for book swap! And some promising resources have been posted, appreciate it. I will try to bring some books over that we can swap as well.

Look forward to meeting some of you at the Friday play dates. What are the details?

We should definitely organize some kind of English language book swap or sale and general recommendations for books for this age group (starting to read but not yet ready to read on their own). The library does have some books in English but our collective selection is going to be much better, I'm sure.

Dear Moms,
For Usborne books you can surely go to Barbara Petri as well, she distributes directly from the publisher from the UK.

Warm regards,

There's a children's library at Liszt Ferenc tér 6 near Oktogon with a very limited English book selection, but we just really enjoy sitting in a library and looking through books. They spoke English so getting the card was no problem in that aspect. It's also been renovated, and has a fireplace. :)

Best,
Marley

We would be very interested in a book swap too. As I guess most of us aren't attending any baby groups, we could set up a meeting once a month or so.

Best wishes,
Kristin

yes, exactly - this is not the baby crowd but the pre-school, early school crowd, ages 4-7, and up... When our kid was smaller I had a good idea of which books were the classics. And I have good memories of things I read when I started reading myself in elementary school. But I'm sort of at a loss for good longer stories to read to him now (age 6). Roald Dahl and L. Frank Baum have been good but they are a bit dated in terms of gender roles/language and other things I'm not sure he's old enough for yet. I don't want to get some super-PC stuff but just some good stories and adventures that I don't have to censor! All suggestions and offers of book loans welcome! :)

by the way, I found all of the Oz books online along with other (adult) classics: http://www.pagebypagebooks.com/L_Frank_Baum/  and I'm sure you can find others, but actual printed books are still the best.

The Ervin Szabó Central Library is a wonderful facility (I’ve used it for my work for some time) - I’m not so sure about people’s English (I speak Hungarian), but it is well appointed overall. I did not really use the kids’ section myself when we were there in 2012, but our sitter got several books out in English for our use. This is the website for the children’s section:

We also got books at Libri, Alexandra, Bestsellers, and the occasional bookseller set up on Vörösmarty Square or Millenáris for special events.

Hi
Just to say that the Szabo Ervin Central Library has quite a big English language section for adults, if you're thinking of books for you too. I don't know about the kids selection there. And even without speaking Hungarian, I'm sure you'd manage to sign up (you do have to pay, but if you're a regular user it's worth it). Also, smaller local libraries are likely to have a shelf or two of English books for kids (at least mine does). Plus I've heard that a few second hand clothes stores also have second hand English books. And finally, I'd second using Book Depository if you want to order anything specific.
So, you'll get your hands on books, don't worry.
Nina
