Hello Moms,
I decided it is not value if I mention that there is a legislation in place but do not bother sharing it- therefore I decided to add a couple of things to the car seats debate- not because I am so "smart", but because we had to buy car seats to be compliant with the EU, Russian and other standards just in case and I have done my research for it.

According to the Hungarian KRESZ- transportation code - updated in 2008, so be updated again in March, generally children under 150cm in height and under 3 years of age must be transported in child restraint applicable to their weight category.
The child seat can be installed in the back seat of a car as well as in the front seat of the vehicle if the restraining mechanism is rear facing and if the front seat of the car either is not equipped with the airbag or the airbag is switched off.

It is not required by law to use the child seat if:
1. The car make does not provide for the child restraining mechanism to be used: such as for the cars cars type M1, N1, N2 and N3. A child under 3 years of age is not allowed to travel in these vehicles at all while children over 3 years of age even having reached 150 cms cannot use the front seat.
2. If the child is transported in the back seat, has reached 3 years of age, is above 135cms tall with the passenger seat belt is in place; installed in accordance with the size of the child's body and can be securely fastened;
3. If the child is travelling at the back seat of the car that is a taxi or a private car registered for passengers transporting purposes.
4. If the child is travelling in police or an ambulance car.
5. If child is travelling on a bus running according to a preset schedule.
6. On a bus travelling not according to a prefixed schedule and transporting standing passengers as well as seated ones.
7. If the child is below 3 years of age and can stand on a bus.
8. When that child is issued with doctor's certificate in accordance with a specifically designed legislation.

A bit on the front car seat: front seat can be used for transporting children who are taller than 150cm regardless of age limit in forward facing position when their body resembles the adults' and can be securely fastened.
The air bag does not need to be disabled. If the child is below 150cms it is legal to transport him/her in the front seat as long as the infant car seat used is rear facing and the air bag is turned off. The child's legs must not be longer than the seat itself.

Regarding the age of the manufacture- where the discussion has started from-  it is only important to know that since 2009 using the child seats manufactured under directives ECE R44-01 and ECE R44-02 is prohibited.
Car seats type 01/02 have not been allowed to be distributed in the EU since 2004, so if you bought your seat before that date it is important to check what directive the seat was manufactured under.
Generally, you will see what requirements you car seat corresponds with on the seat itself, printed on the orange sticker.

The most recent compliance directives are ECE R44-03 and ECE R44-04.
The orange sticker I mentioned will also tell you more about the seat itself. The type: Universal means that the seat can be used in all types of car (which could also be Semi-Universal or Specific to the specific car model).
Weight limit is also indicated, and a letter E in circle indicates that the car seat has met the compliance requirements, with the number next to it indicating the issuing country code that has given approval to the compliance checks.

I have seen two cars here in Budapest with infant seats installed in the front passenger seat... I am pretty sure that would be illegal, and yet it happens.

Hi Christine,

Before choosing a seat for our son I spent a lot of time searching for a safe car seat that scored really well on tests (like the well known German ADAC).

We ended up choosing a HTS iZi Combi X1 (not isofix)that can be used rear facing and forward facing afterwards.

Same company has one with isofix called HTS model Izi Kid X3 ISOfix.

I'm pretty sure they sell them at Brendon, they have a huge selection of child seats for every age. They also have a big selection of Britax-Roemer car seats that you asked for (we just bought one for our baby who is due anytime).

Hi all,

We're quickly approaching the time that we need to get a new car seat
for Nora since she is outgrowing the first stage one that we have for
her. I'd like to comply with the new standard of "rear-facing until
the age of 2" and just started doing some research on where I might
find a seat that can be used through that stage and that is rear
facing. I was interested in the Britax rear-facing seats. Does anyone
know where you can buy these (or other rear-facing seats for older
babies) here in Budapest?

Thanks for any tips!

Christine
