Dear all

Can non citizens buy a car in Hungary ? I've been told by a dealership that I can't.
I know there are many expats on this list so pls let me know your experience.
Thx.

Hi,

I would think you need to be a resident to buy a car, get an insurance and a Hungarian licence plate, unless you are buying it for export. Citizenship should not be an issue, I am not a Hungarian citizen (neither EU) but I bought a car here. Good luck!

All best,

Hi,

Also I had no problem with buying my car here in Budapest.
I am neither a Hungarian citizen nor a EU citizen but I had Residence permit(Tartozkodasi Engedely) at the moment of purchasing my own car from dealer as new car.
My husband bought a used car with having Residence permit(Tartozkodasi Engedely).

So I think citizenship is not required, but you have to have Residence permit(Tartozkodasi Engedely) to buy your own car.
Hope it helps.

Cheers,

Ok thanks
That helps. I do have a residence permit and I am considering buying a used car.

Hi, we just bought a new car, and we needed to provide lakcim kartya/address card, and then tax number for the insurance. And since my husband and I both wanted to be users/owners of the car we needed these documents for both of us. I also experienced slightly different requirements from different dealers, so you need to check every time what is required. There is a difference in weather you are non-eu citizen, but some dealers do not mind that.
Hope this helps
