Dear all,

I want to give something to my friends who just had their first baby-boy, something Hungarian and something not too pricey. I looked at baby clothing but find them either way over-priced or not that special. I was wondering if there are typical Hungarian toys I could give them. Or something for winter?
Any ideas appreciated!

Thanks,
Rika

Hi Rika,

I thing that clothes are not the best, because kids grow out of them too fast. But I think, that bibs are a great idea! We got national bibs for my boy from England (with the flag and his name on it), from Spain, Croatia, Austria, and we still use them with my younger son and they always make me remember of those sweet friends! Maybe a newborn won't use it in the first months, but then they'll use it for a long time!

I think you can find these in markets at Vörösmarty tér for example, but I also just found a website, where they make you bib with a photo, so you could put a Hungarian flag or picture of Budapest on it plust the baby's name. Check it here: http://www.sooters.hu/ajandektargyak/baba-partedli?gclid=CKzV7L_D-LoCFQlb3godFwYAIA

Best,
Barbi

Hi Rika,
When all my nieces and nephews were born I got a blanket made for them with their name sewn on to it and the kids all have them hanging up in their bedrooms still years later. I found this woman as she happened to have her workshop near me at the time, now she does it from home but she does have a website, you can say whatever you would like to have on it or she has plenty of examples on her site, the cost of a blanket could be about 10,000-12,000 Ft but I am not sure as I haven't ordered one for quite a while now, this could be more than you planned to pay but they are nice and special. On the page I have attached click on to 'falvedok' and 'jatszoszonyegek' to see examples of blankets. She doesn't speak much english but her son and daughter do I think. But if you are interested and need some help in communicating just let me know as I have ordered lots from her.

Maria

Hi,
If there was a like botton I would use it for Deirde's answer, that is such a nice idea. I am Hungarian and I grew up with watching that cartoon, and I wouldn't mind getting one of that toy even now :-). It is a bunny so regardless of knowing the cartoon or not , it is a nice cuddly toy.

Have a nice evening!

Hi Rika
I ordered personalised fleece blankets from takoo.hu
Really pretty stuff. You can check their catalogue online
Site is in Hungarian but I managed to register and order using google translate and if u call the lady she speaks enough English to answer your questions
The newborn size (0-2y) costs HUF 5400 plus delivery or u can pickup at their shop.
Bigger sizes obviously cost more.

fakopancs.hu has a lot of Hungarian wooden toys, they have many shops around the korut (Baross utca, Wesselenyi stop of the tram 4/6) with reasonable prices.

I've given the wooden bird (I think it's a stork) mobile from Fakopancs many times for newborns and we also have one for our son. He loved it at different stages of his baby and toddlerhood. It's the kind with a weight hanging down so that when you pull it, the bird "flies". Not expensive (less than 2000 HUF) or heavy/bulky, Hungarian, and really nice. And their other things are great, too like Andi said. I often go to their shop when I need a gift for a baby or older child.

but I would also "like" Deidre's idea!
