Dear Tabatha,
I have 2 children but when I had similar problems my doctor always said to try giving salty sticks (ropi) as it will make them drink so it is a way of preventing drying out, plus have a cup of not cold cola stir the gas out of it and have your little one sip it. It helps her not throwing up.
These are my tips (gotten from a good doctor) until you find someone. But you can also call 112 there might be someone at the other end speaking English and you can even ask them what to do.
Good luck!
Krisztina

I am wondering if people could suggest a good pediatrician/nurse/hospital. I have a 7 month old. I have only been here for a couple months. Today my daughter threw up about 4 times. When I called First Med to get her in they said I could not be seen for several hours. I am wondering what I do in case of emergencies. In the states I know there are emergency rooms and 911. I also have been seeing a pediatrician at first med who speaks English but a lot seems to get lost in translation. I would love a doctor or nurse's line that I could call or text at any time for questions. Any advice would be great! Tabatha

Dear Tabatha,

I know a really good doctor working for Dr. Rose private clinic. His name is Zsolt Pintér, and is really awesome. However the clinic itself is rather expensive and I don't have more information on their other services, but Dr. Pintér liked by parents and children.

And Krisztina's advice about 'ropi' and coke usually work for my sons also (even though I never buy coke for them). :))

Take care,
Emese

Dear Tabatha,

We had to go for a hearing test with my newborn, we chose Rozsakert Medical Center for that (
http://www.medical-center.hu/Index.aspx). We met a really nice pediatrician there with perfect English, grew up/studied in the US. She is called dr Jokay Kinga, they do housecalls too.

Have a nice day,
Eszter

Dear Tabatha,

I am very sorry that your little one so sick! I can also suggest a wonderful dr from Rozsakert medical center, she speaks fluent English since she trained in the USA- plus has an amarican husband-, she is not only a good dr but a very kind person too. I've known her for more then 10 years, so I can suggest her from the bottom of my heart. Her name is dr Orsolya Gudor and she does home calls as well.(at least did in the past)

A wish speedy recovery for your tiny one!

Take care !

Venus

Hi Tabatha,

Sorry she is not feeling so good. Since my husband works at FirstMed I take my daughter to Dr. Bene there. We really like her, especially our daughter who she is so caring with. I know Dr. Bene worked in the US for a long time and speaks excellent  english, at least my husband says so. If he didn't work there I would still recommend her. They have a on-call pediatrician at night or weekends so someone should always be able to be reached or give you a call back if you ask. I hope your daughter feels better soon, I remember how scared I was when Madeleine threw up for first time.

Hi Tabatha,
I vote for Dr Pinter too!! He is a very good doctor from a scientific point of view and really loves children.
He is very calm and gentle with them..
My 10 month old son likes him a lot too, he doesn't complain  even when he is getting his vaccinations!!
On the other hand Dr Rose charges a ridiculous amount of money for the service...
If you have a TAJ number they will charge you 25,000Ft for a hospital visit and 44,000 Ft if you don't have one.
Another Budapest Mom informed me that they have some packages which are more reasonable but I think that you have to ask them
Hope that your little one will recover soon!!!

Best Regards
Chrysa

Hi Tabatha,

Jókay Kinga from Rózsakert is really very good, too. I invited her last year to the school to make a first aid course for parents, and she was amazing! I can reccomend her too.

Hi Tabatha,

I work at FirstMed, so take that into account. :)

I think all of our pediatricians are wonderful, and we even have an American Board Certified pediatrician in the person of Dr. Bene. We can usually give same-day appointments, depending on the doctor's schedule, and if you call during the day, the pediatrician on duty will take your call or return it as soon as they become available. At night, we have a pediatrician on call who is available by phone to answer questions, or to see your baby in urgent cases.

If you need emergency care, where not even a few hours' wait is acceptable, you can take your child to your nearest designated emergency hospital. If you have trouble communicating with the staff, you can always call FirstMed and the receptionists will help translate over the phone.

Here is a list of pediatric urgent care centers:

Heim Pál Children's Hospital serves districts 8, 10, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23
1089 Budapest Üllői út 86.

Szent János hospital serves districts 1, 2, 3, 11, 12, 22
Building 24
1125 Budapest, Diós árok 1-3.

1138 Budapest , Révész u. 10-12. serves districts 4, 5, 6, 7, 13, 14, 15

1098 Budapest Tűzoltó u. 71-75. serves district 9

Hope this helps! How are you guys doing today? :)

Dear Tabatha,
Both our daughters age 4 and 11 months old are taken care of by Doctor Kinga Jokay and Dr Orsolya Gundor at Roszakert Medical Center.
They are both truly fabulous, highly qualified and often go beyond what they have to do to help us. And my kids love them!
Right before moving in December, my eldest one got rotavirus and was not even keeping the water down. They took us in and monitored her all day in between appointments, putting her on IV when it became necessary.
As a general rule, they told us to first give her a few sips of water every 10 min, and then when she was keeping it, a bit more and a bit more. Then try one salty cracker, wait 30 minutes, if it stays down, give another, etc... And keep food light for a few days until it returns to normal.

They are truly great and speak perfect English both having been trained and having worked in the USA. And the pediatric nurses are great too and speak English.

Hope your little one will feel better soon
Sandrine

Dear all,

Hope all is well with you.
Could you please recommend me a good health insurance for my daughter (not expensive)? because the Kindergarten ask me to bring a health insurance (TAJ) and a family doctor (pediatrician), I am not sure of how to find and apply for them because I am new in Budapest as just started my PhD study.

Any help? ..... Thanks in advance and appreciated.
Note: My address is in 1068 Kiraly utca.

Dear Mouhamed,
If you are enrolled in university, student service should be able to help you. If you have taj insurance yourself then it might be automtic for your family or not.
In case if you will have to pay for your insurance yourself for your child and your all family members, then probably  private insurance will be cheaper than state one. And in comparisson, maybe it makes sense to pay for private kindergarten than for state insurance. State insurance may be very expensive, it all depends on your legal status here.
Best to consult in university.
Good luck
