I was told that you can help me in this matter, your recomendation is more than welcome since we have checked 2 schools until now, British Internationals chool and American School but we cannot afford any of it.We are looking for an English intrenational school - as per my my son's teacher advice.

Thank you,

Hi, Laura.

I saw that Barbi Dallos recommended GGIS, and I recommend it too.  It's much more affordable than the schools you mentioned, though still not cheap (2.72 million HUF per year for grades 1-6).  It's an American-curriculum, Christian-based private school.  I've known a few families who've sent their children there, and they highly recommend it as well.  My daughter (turning six next month) will start 1st grade there this year.

We're originally from the Dallas, Texas area and have been in Budapest for 3 1/2 years.  We currently live on the Pest side and plan to stay here for at least two more years.  If you have any more specific questions, I'll be happy to help.  Just send me an email, and we can discuss the details to the best of my ability.

Good luck on your search.  You're so fortunate to have found the Budapest Moms group before coming here... good for you!  :D

Best regards,
Keesha Ivy

Belvarosi Jatekovoda in the 5th district has a new program for school aged children.
I don't know all the details, but although its a kindergarten, I recommend very highly the teacher they have chosen for this new program. Oh and very cheap.

I don't know if it meets your needs, but its worth trying!

Thank you Keesha, Lisa and Barbara for your  emails.
I plan to come to Budapest in one week trip late August and meet teachers at several schools before deciding which one we choose.
I put GGIS school on my list, the other school Jatek Ovoda I think is way too Hungarian and not sure it will help my son to integrate (I know from experience when there is a group of people talking the same language people will switch to that language at some point in time)
Have you heard anything about Britannica? Good or bad...
Thank you again,
Laura

Hi Laura,

In case GGIS is still over your budget, then you can check out smaller international kindergartens. I have a friend whose daughters go to Under the Rainbow which is quite close to the American School, and she loves it. I don't have first hand experience with the school, but my friend checked quite a lot when she was looking for a school for her daughters and finally voted for this one. They are fully international, but much cheaper of course, being a small school. My friend says that they also have a special program for children who are going to attend elementary school the next year.

Good luck for your search!

Hi Laura,

our daughter, 16, goes to Britannica. It's average I'd say. But then again, I don't know about their lower grades. From what I heard from parents of children your son's age, it's actually quite good. The thing I mind a lot about the higher grades, is that they seem to be too relaxed most of the time on rules, and then all of the sudden try to reinforce them strongly. It gives mixed messages to the kids. To be honest, I'm up for very clear rules, that kids are required to stick to with very clear consequences as well, but that might be the Czech education system in me. So the higher grades are a bit of a mess and the kids need a lot of self-motivation to succeed with their studies.

Good luck with your choice!

Dear Laura,

My daughter also goes to Unther the Rainbow. The yearly fee is HUF 1.6m. And they have different programs for final year students, depending on which school system (British, American, Hungarian) you choose. If you need more information, let me know, and I can give you contact to them!

Thanks a lot, that is a very important insight since one cannot spot it in a discussion with school representatives. I'll bear that in mind when I get to talk to them, thanks again, Laura

Hello Laura,
My husband and I have lived in Diosd, Hungary, for nearly 10 years.  I would recommend the International Christian School of Budapest (www.icsbudapest.org).  My husband teaches HS sciences there and I taught MS science.  (We now have two kids and I stay home with them.)  The school is quite cheap compared to the other international schools in the area, but it is actually located just outside of the city limits, in Diosd.  The classes are challenging and there's quite a few extrarcurricular activities for the kids.

If you haven't already found a school, this one is worth checking into I think. :)

My son (just turned 8) is attending Britannica. IT is a lovely school. It is a primary and a secondary school. Can't say too much about secondary but primary school is excellent! Good teachers and a dedicated head of primary. My son likes going to this school every single day !
