Hi Teagan. This is more a question then answer, is the home birth allow in Hungary? I heard they banned  few years ago, but since you asked I was wondering what happen since then.

Hi Group!

My name is Teagan.  My partner and I are both from Toronto, and have been living in Budapest for approximately 2 1/2 years.  We are expecting our first child this fall, and are planning on a home birth.  I was wondering if anyone has given birth at home recently and would be willing to share their experience with midwives / post natal care and interactions with the Vedono and Pediatrician?

Also, has anyone had to transfer to the hospital?  If so, which hospital did you transfer to and how was the experience over all?

Looking forward to any insight anyone would be willing to share - many thanks!

I don't have any experiences with home birth other than to say that I have met two of the home birth midwives who are working now in Budapest and found them to be very lovely. Also, just wanted to write to say that home birth is definitely legal now in Hungary, and has been since last year I think?

Hi,

Since 2011 home birth is a legal option in Hungary, and there are a few officially registered midwives in Budapest even (registration is quite an expensive and exhaustive process).

St Istvan is where most home birth mothers would end up if they needed to transfer, and that happens to be our district hospital.

We are now seeing Dr. Koiss, and he told my partner at our appointment that he has been back up for three or so home births and noone has ever had to come in so far - hopefully I will be as lucky!

I think if you're interested, it's definitely worth looking into. There are some non negotiable hurdles, like Strep B and a breech baby, which will send you to the hospital, but for the most part, it's really within reach now.

Hey Teagan!

I had a legal home birth on January 10th with my son. My husband and I are from the States, so we did not meet with the vedono and we were blessed not to have an emergency transfer. Although, if we had, we would have gone to Szent Imre, as it is only 2 km from us.

Our midwives were amazing and I want to do it again when we have another child. I can send you contact info for our midwives, if you like, and we can meet together for coffee if you want to talk more about my experience. I would write more, but I'm on my phone with a baby in the other arm!

Hi Teagan,

I don't have any first hand experience with home birth (I had my 3 boys in MÁV hospital), but a very good friend of mine had her second baby at home in Nagykovácsi. She is a midwife herself, and a breasfeeding and baby-massage expert. If you want me to, I can help you to get in touch with her. Just let me know!

Have a nice day,
Emese

Hi Ladies,

Sorry I have been a bit AWOL - what about us all meeting up for some coffee to discuss our experiences/plans?

Would sometime next week work?

Coffee next week would be great. I'm free Monday through Thursday. I live in 11th district in between the 4/6 tram split, but can travel. Just let me know!

As for the birth certificate, our midwife filled out the same form that the hospital gives you (a multi-page green form) and an official stamped signed document from our licensed midwife and we took that to the 11th district office, where they gave our son his Hungarian birth certificate (because we are both American, it says he is of "unknown nationality"), then we took the Hungarian certificate to the US Embassy and got his US birth certificate and passport. We applied for his SS card, which was sent to my parents' house in the States (our "permanent" address). We could have had my parents send it to us, but I did not want to take the risk of it getting lost in the mail.

There is more I can share, but I'm trying to put my thoughts together (we were so busy, we forgot to write down a lot of what we did)! Hopefully, I'll be more organized when we meet.

Hey Megan!

Sorry I got a bit blindsided this week. How would Monday the 20th work for you? I'm in the 9th also on the 4/6 and do not mind to travel :)

Hi,

I attempted a home birth with a complicated pregnancy, I laboured at home for around 25 hours and transferred to a hospital. I did use the state vedono and pediatrici20an and I'd be happy to share my experience. I am unfortunately not free on the 20th because my Mum's in town, but I'll drop you my birth and pregnancy story and other information on the home birth and baby registering paperwork and hopefully you'll find it helpful. I had my baby 3 1/2 months ago.

Regards,
Vanita

I think that would work for me. I know it's a holiday, but I don't know what would be open and what would be closed. Do you have any ideas?

Sometime in the afternoon would work best for me, perhaps 3 pm or so?

Hi Vanita,

That would be great! It's too bad you're not available, but have a great time with your mom and I'd love to catch up later :)

Thanks!
