Who We Are
Vantage Research, a recently launched Chennai-based startup, provides modeling and simulation services that help pharmaceutical companies in the process of developing new drugs.
Big Pharma’s low yield of blockbuster drugs in the past decade is a well-studied phenomenon; a notoriously slow and expensive drug development process with a high failure rate being an important factor in this decline. Therefore, model-based drug development has become a key initiative to help increase the output of new drugs while reducing development costs.
At Vantage Research, we contribute to this increasingly important area in drug development. By providing expert modeling and simulation services tailored specifically to the needs of pharmaceutical companies, we provide insights that guide our customers in making crucial decisions, such as determining the most therapeutically efficacious dosage for a new drug, or identifying the most impactful pathway to target to treat a particular disease. The end result is an increased success rate at lower costs.
Vantage Research partners with other niche modeling and simulations companies as well works directly with pharmaceutical companies.
What we do
At Vantage, the work involves applying mathematical techniques to create models of diseases (e.g., diabetes, cancer), in order to predict what drug parameters (e.g., dosage, frequency) will result in the desired outcome for a patient. The work is done on a project basis, in close collaboration with clients. Typically, each project team consists of members from Vantage and the client, with the client providing details about the relevant biological processes and interactions of the system under study, and Vantage creating models and running simulations to answer specific questions. The work is inherently interdisciplinary and typically requires highly qualified researchers with an inclination to apply mathematical techniques to solve real-world problems.

Scientist
· Strives to understand the problem and solution arrived at by team discussion so that the research can progress smoothly
· Assists senior members of the team in accomplishing project goals
· Develops models and can analyze dynamics, parameter sensitivities and general behavior of systems studied
· Surveys available literature summaries and papers to make reasoned decisions on biological representation
· Shows initiative to develop tools, scripts etc. to make workflows more efficient
· Summarizes research steps taken and their contribution to project goals effectively to team members and customers
Senior Scientist
· Communicates with external research team to identify research question
· Sets up problem statement for complex research problem and break down into research flow
· Supervises devised research flow implemented by junior team members
· Summarizes strengths & limitations of research approach effectively to team members and customers
· Communicates with internal technical and business stake-holders on project progress
· Understands project planning and management and has 5 or more years of experience in corporate R&D settings
Background & Brief Bios:
Rukmini completed her Master’s in Physics at IIT Madras, and then a Ph. D. in Applied Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. Her Ph.D. thesis kick-started her career in applying mechanistic mathematical models to problems in human physiology, and resulted in a physiological model for a startup company, Immunetrics. She then worked at Entelos, a leading player in this space for 7 years before moving to India to start a consulting practice. She is now the Principal at Vantage Research.
Vikram completed his MS Computer Engineering at Drexel, and worked in Internet & Communications technologies – first at Marconi (now Ericsson) for 5 years and then at Cisco for the last 7.5 years. His work experience has ranged from software engineering to Product Management, Marketing and Business Development. Vikram is now working to scale up Vantage Research. Vikram has an MBA from the Haas School of Business, Berkeley.
