Corvallis Audubon Society needs volunteer botanists for nature center restoration.
The Audubon Society of Corvallis has a small, 6-acre nature center on Oak Creek Road. It was donated to ASC by the late former mayors, Alan and Helen Berg (they were both Corvallis mayors!), and they asked that we retain the name of Hesthavn, which is Danish for “horse haven.” Of course our own focus in not on horses, and we are struggling to restore the meadow of pasture grasses (and the riparian woodland) back to native plants. This is a peaceful little spot to work in, but the restoration requires someone(s) knowledgeable (not perfect!) about botany, ecology, and especially Willamette Valley and Coast Range species, and who is somewhat independent.
You do not need to commit a lot of time, or stick to any schedule, but if you’d like to “adopt” a patch or work in some other capacity, we would love to hear from you. We do this on a small scale, so it’s like gardening—lots of weeding and planting, and mowing with a weedeater, but mostly weeding. You can do your own planning, experimenting, choosing plants, etc., and the tools and funds are provided.
We have about 7 major invasive weed species, so digging and monitoring those is another opportunity. You can pretty much choose your project, within reason.
