Ag Expo 2012 – Volunteers needed!
What: Benton SWCD is recruiting volunteers to work a 3-hour shift on one day during Ag Expo. Our activity will use a stream simulation table to teach 2nd and 3rd graders about stream function and agricultural land management that protects water quality.
When: Three days of fun! Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday - October 9-11, 2012
Shifts:
· 8:30 to 11:30 AM
· 11:30 AM to -2:30 PM
Why: Ag Expo alternates years with Forest Expo to offer hands-on fun activities to almost 700 youth each year.
Where: Benton County Fairgrounds arena.
How: 10 activity stations are visited by small groups of kids every 12 minutes. Yep – a busy time! During the 12-minute session, we introduce basic concepts of stream hydrology and the practices that agricultural land stewards use to protect water quality. For example:
· Livestock poop in creek – fencing
· Pollution from barns, machinery, houses or other farm operations – design operations to create spatial barriers between pollution source and surface water. For example, where would you put manure or compost piles?
· Buildings too close to stream – design site with structures out of flood zone
· Habitat enhancement – riparian plantings cool water and add biodiversity to stream habitat
· Elements of fish habitat – design stream with rocks and wood for happy fish.
· Think up more fun concepts…
Training is available prior to event.
