Spend Saturday afternoon experiencing local Indigenous perspectives.

 

Tarweed Awakening Corvallis

The Plant, The Person, The Place

Saturday, August 23rd from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

 

You are invited to the Tarweed Awakening Corvallis. Champinefu means the Place of the people of Pinefu (Marys River).

Schedule of 4 venues:

1:15 pm & 2:15 pm  - Tours of Shawala Point, leave from Wild Yeast Bakery

 

1:00-3:00 pm - Indigenous Tarweed practices related to Tarweed at Wade Hardware, 2nd and Adams. Arrive at any time within that time frame.


1:00-3:00 pm, Mystery of 2 Men with the Same Name at the Corvallis Museum, 2nd and Adams. Arrive at any time within that time frame.

 

3:00 -3:30 pm Three Short Presentations at Wild Yeast Bakery

  • Sawal – The Plant
  • Sawala – The Person
  • Sawala Point – The Place

 

How to participate:

The Awakening is free and open to the public. There is no registration, so just show up. Oh, and it will be hot, so bring water to drink.

  • Park at the large City parking lot at Western Ave. and 2nd Street.
  • Start at Wild Yeast Bakery.  648 SW 2nd Street & B Avenue with outdoor tents featuring displays and greeters to help get you oriented and started.

 

Tarweed Awakening Corvallis will help us all learn about:

  • Tarweed (asawal), a critical first food of the Ampinefu Kalapuya.
  • Sawala (AKA William Hartless), the person, named after asawal (Tarweed) and left us the information we currently know of the local Ampinefu Kalapuya people.
  • Sawala (AKA Shawala) Point (named after the person who was named for the Tarweed plant) at the confluence of the Pinefu (Marys) River and the Willamette River.
