Michael Vershima Atovigba, Math Education Lecturer with Benue State University Makurdi Nigeria has come up with a novel way of calculating total number of primes below or up to a natural number N. Such an equation has been said to be impossible to find, thus leading to various zeta functions propounded to approximate total number of primes up to N, the most revered one being Riemann zeta function with its all-important Riemann Hypothesis.
How did Atovigba find the equation? from studying Tiv farm heaps layout with take the form of pascal's triangle. From the heaps Atovigba discovered a matrix of odd numbers from where he realized that the set of odd numbers contains two mutually exclusive sets - that of primes and that of odd composites. Atovigba realized that if he found an equation that isolated odd composites, what would be left would be odd primes! so he prayed that God show him the algorithm for extracting odd composites - which answer he got. this is the K-C prime number equation i.e find K total number of odds up to N, then find C total number number of composites up to N. Subtract C from K. the result is total number of primes up to N. The work has enjoyed peer review at National Mathematics Centre Abuja and Mathematical Association of Nigeria.
