In the 2011/2012 academic session, data evidence shows that Ukum and
Oju LGAs have the highest primary school enrolment in Benue State.
Statistics obtained by Daily Tigons from the state Universal Basic
Education Board indicate that the total pupil enrolment in Benue State
is 59,428. Out of this figure, Ukum has the highest number of 8,419,
followed by Oju with 6,963 pupils.
Agatu LGA is third in pupil enrolment with 3,289 while Makurdi and Obi
LGAs tie at 4th position with 3,198 each.
At the rock bottom is Ohimini LGA with 221 pupils enrolment, and next
least is Opkokwu (813), and Tarka (918).
The data shows that more boys (32,872) than girls (26,556) were
enrolled in the 2011/2012 session, and that the state’s public schools
have more male teachers (2,492) than female teachers (708) – the total
teacher population being 3,200 for the state’s 462 public primary
schools. Of these, Agatu LGA has the least number of female teachers
(6), while Buruku and Tarka follow each with 7 female teachers only;
Ado and Logo have respectively 8 and 9 female teachers only.
The data has that Oju and Kwande have the largest number of male
teachers (195 and 190 respectively), followed by Katsina Ala (173),
Makurdi (160) and Ukum (156).
In terms of number of schools, Oju tops with 48, followed by Ukum
(34), Kwande (32), with Gboko and Katsina Ala (26 each).
The least number of schools is with Tarka (9), followed by Gwer West
(10) and Logo and Ohimini tying at 12 number of schools each.
