Hi Comrades,
The society was started in the academic year 2010-2011 during the 2nd semester. the whole idea is accredited to Hongo, a 4th year student taking Bsc.(biotechnology) and a group of like minded individuals who included Dan Ouso (MCB), Albert Njogu (MCB), Morris Kiruga (Forensic), Peter Owuor (Biochemistry), Alex Rop (Microbiology),Justin Nyasinga (Microbiology), Tabitha(Microbiology) and others.
The reason behind its formation was failure of the respective clubs to deliver quality services to their members due to few membership and small financial base.
The vision of the society is an empowered bio-sciences student community in Kenyatta University, employing knowledge and skill based interventions to improve community livelihood, and drive economic and intellectual growth.
The mission of the society is to build the capacities of bio-sciences students in Kenyatta University in order to equip them with transferable scientific skills and competencies, and to empower them to apply these skills in carrying out demand driven, community targeted projects, inventions and innovations.
The main goal of the society is to expose students to the practical application of bio-sciences in addressing societal needs and driving economic growth.
The society was officially born during its launch on 22nd October 2012 at BSSC at 1600hrs by the dean of SPAS, Prof Kiplagat Kotut and the patron of the society and director Keria Development and placement Dr Eunice Kairu together with Dr Mary Mwangi of Biochemistry and Biotechnology department.I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members who made it to the launch because without the this whole idea wouldn't have come to be. The society tends to bring together students from all the bio-sciences related courses which include Bsc General(Biochemistry/biology), Bsc Biotechnology, Bsc Biochemistry, Bsc MCB, Bsc Forensic science,Bsc Microbiology, Bsc Marine Biology, Bsc Animal Health,Bsc Conservation Biology and Bsc Biology.
There is an ongoing registration of members at a fee of 100/- and a semester subscription of 100/-,giving a total of 200/- per member.
The society aims at undertaking activities such as hand washing in partnership with related companies and key stakeholders,Bio-safety awareness in partnership with Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology and National Bio-safety Authority, and a career training aimed at training members to be career trainers. The society has also organized a seminar on research methodology,on the week beginning 12th Nov, which aims at showing students how to do a research concept.
During the health week, the society will have its own stand at BSSC and students are invited to come and learn more.
Yours; Secretary General
