Replacing the disc brake?

Hi All,

I was advised to replace the disc brakes of my R15 after just 8100 km . 

Isn't is too early ? Or is it all that is the life of R15 disc brave. It would be a subjective matter too depending
on th driver's driving habits,

  Did you mean disc pads? If its disc pads then its OK. I changed my pads at 5500km. Now i have done over 11000km and its due for replacement again. It depends on braking habits. If its disc plate you are talking about, then something went wrong. Disc plates are reliable. they do not wear out easily. You will need replacement only if you damaged it.

A related question- why should disc pads be so expensive? 1100 Rs for the rear ones? Is it as expensive for say other bikes like apache..etc..

i don't think so, rear pads for 1100....my breaks were also not
working properly (due to lubrication, after it worked fine) i asked
dealer he said max 500-700 for pads...u check at different dealers in
ur city n then get it changed...

The R15's front disc pads cost Rs 685 and the rear ones cost Rs 1115.

Both are imported and cost higher than other products in the market. The rear ones are Nissin make and are made for very progressive type braking - purpose made for a track bike and very useful at its task.

Most of us have the habit of using rear brake more and that's why they wear out faster. My R15's rear pads were changed at 15K KMs and they still had little more life in them. I changed because I was planning to go on a loooong ride. For the record, my front pads needed a replacement at 12K KMs.

I am in no way justifying the cost of the pads. They are outright expensive. But just to make you feel a little lighter - the Karizma's/CBZ's Nissin pads cost Rs 2300 :D

Another thing, the rear disc costs Rs 900 :D... if you are not so bothered about the braking effectiveness, you may opt to wear out the disc instead of changing the pads :D :D just kidding!

Ya. that's useful information. For me the Yamaha guys replaced only the rear pads - for Rs. 1115. I complained them
of a scratching kind of noise when I moved the rear wheel manually. Surprised that changing pads was the solution!

I keep track of the pads' life regularly. There is a marking (cut) on the pads that is visible (mentioned even in the manual) and the moment the marking disappears it is time to change the pads. I check this every time I lube my chain - every 500-700 KMs.

on the R15, use only the front brake to reduce speed... the rear brake can be tapped a little bit to aid the front once the initial jerk of braking is over and if the speed needs to be reduced much faster... but again, do not use this hard and especially when you see gravel/sand/slush on the road.

Thanks Krishna.. you seem knowledgeable.. here some more questions..

1. How lube you use to lubricate the chain?
2. Have you changed the light bulbs to the white ones (not sure what they are called)

I find my mileage dropped from a good 38km per litre to 31 km per litre? Can you relate to anything particular? Any experience.

Answer to few of your questions:
- You need a stand (to mount the rear wheel) to lubricate the chain, since R15 doesn't have a middle stand (not that it was supposed to have). Only if you have a stand you can look further into the lube-yourself-thing. I generally do it at my service station (takes 30 mins and costs 120 rs)
- I've seen mileage dropping. In my case it happens when the bike is close to the next service. Just after the servicing the mileage is very good, but once the riding has happened for more than ~300 KMs I've seen the mileage dropping. I think thats logical too, because you're chain is drier and engine oil is less fresh. Not sure if these are the *actual* reasons though.

I wanted to add something -

Having a center stand (fixed or temporary) or a paddock stand is very useful particularly for chain maintenance. But I used to lube the chain on side stand itself until a few months back when I got my center stand fixed. That method needs either one extra person or you alone but with extra patience!

I use OKS chain lube (451) and degreaser on my R15's chain and lube it every 500-700 KMs. The lube + degreaser set costs Rs 700. This time I wanted to try Tribocor TC 40 that I have seen with a friend. Even Motul has chain lube & degreaser but my personal experience is that OKS stays better and costs lesser.

The mileage part - I noticed drop in mileage from about 41 KMPL to 37 KMPL when I do full throttle ride for at least 300 KMs. When the chain is dry and loose the mileage does drop but it is not that bad. When the chain was set very tight once I got less than 30 KMPL. When the rear tyre is loosing pressure and has come below 20 PSi I noticed the mileage drop to about 30 KMPL. I did not notice any drop in mileage with respect to the service schedule. Most of my ride is on the highways and I have clocked about 17.5K KMs so far.

Headlights - if you want little better visibility with the same rating, walk into a Honda Spares shop and buy Unicorn headlight bulb - that Philips bulb (made in Germany) that comes in the Uni/FZ is good but costs Rs 200. But the R15 can take one 55/60W bulb. You can go for a Osram Nightbreaker (Rs 800) or Osram Silver Star (Rs 200) in that wattage for some very good lighting. Nightbreaker is very good but very expensive. If you go for 55/60W bulbs on both the headlamps the battery would drain out. Also, the reflectors would loose their shine and turn brown sooner. Replacing that costs Rs 2100. Think about what is more important to you and go for a change. Please do NOT use any bulb that has a blue coating on the bulb itself.

I didn't know you could get a center stand fixed. Do Yamaha service centers do this or you got it done elsewhere? If possible could you post some snaps of how the center stand is fixed in case you got it done from elsewhere, so that others can benefit from it? Any details that you'd like to add will be very helpful.
A centre stand is not only useful while lubing the chains, but is almost *essential* when you have a puncture and needs to be repaired. My R15's rear wheel had a very small punctures, almost invisible to naked eye. I had a tough time hosting the bike on one stand and get it detected at my puncture-wala.

Nissan pads are generic brake pads, the branded once like Galfer's etc I dont know if they make it for R15,  then again we are used to more rear barke and less front.
 
You should try ebay.in, ebay.com.au and/or ebay.com. offent these sites are cheaper the the OE. Then again check the import charges etc.
 
You can get a non-OE rotor also cheaper then what you have been quoted.

yes. the stand is available in Yamaha showrooms. It costs about Rs 750 in total. If your showroom doesn't have, tell them to order one for you. I would be able to give you the product codes too if they don't have.

It is essential for servicing. Since I use my bike for long rides I need the center stand to make my work with chain and wheels a little easier. This stand is being imported from Indonesia (from the Vixion spares that has the same chassis) and is a properly designed one that doesn't reduce ground clearance. But I park my bike on the side stand and in 1st gear. Feels safer that way!

I too was advised by authorized service  to change the rear brake pads. My local fitter said, they are fine & could easily go on for another couple of thousand kilometers. I did not change.
