I bought a new R15 and on the very 2nd day, it started making a kind
of whistling sound. Now I read from various posts that this souns is
related to the FI system and has got to do with vaporisation.
But the weird thing is that when I listen to the frequency of the
occurence of these whistles - it seems to be related to the speed of
the wheel - not the engine.
I know this because I observed - no matter which gear I am in, the
whistle frequency is constant at a given speed.
Example: Once I am at speed of 40 kmph, no matter which gear I am in,
the frequency is same.
So it has gotta be related to the wheel or drive chain right?
I mean if it were the engine, the sound should be proportional to
engine RPM - which is not the case.
Has anyone traced this sound to the drive chain too ?

Hi Deepak,

If you have reasons to be particularly concerned about then you should show it to Yamaha service. However, when I got scared the first time I heard a whistle sound - the dealer explained that its because it pumps in fuel and its normal. Usually, if I find that the whistling doesn't go off, I just switch of the engine and re-start again and it goes away for sure. I had never seen it as a prolonged affair

Anil

Hi Deepak,

The whistling sound comes from the petrol tank only. If its coming from the
engine or elsewhere and you feel it's a matter of concern you should
immediately show it to the service centre. In a new R15, chain sound is
more, it will reduce over a few days. Although, the chain needs lubrication
at regular intervals.

Pl write back for more discussions..

Vikram

The whistle noise is a random sound and sometimes continuous with varying intensity. This comes from the petrol tank as the vapors try to escape through the hole provided for them. This sound has no relation to whether the engine is on or not or at what speed the bike is moving. I get this sound randomly when I run the bike in hot sun or park it in sun for a while... some times even when the bike is parked in shade for a few days untouched. If the noise is becoming more, open the petrol lid and close it. It will shut up.

The other noise can be a very tiny one from the brake pads. Dust particles and tiny stones get stuck in the disc pads and keep rubbing onto the disc. Since you say the bike is very new, pls check for any uneven lines on the discs and that might indicate a foreign particke there. With some effort you can manually rotate the wheels and see if the sound comes in. If it comes in, take the bike to teh SC and get your brake pads cleaned and sandpapered. This sound is common in rainy season.

The chain noise comes in not like a whistle but like "ghunghroo" type. Very common and needs proper adjustment and lubrication.

Hope this helps

Krishna

Thanks Anil,

It sure is comforting to hear that it is normal. I will show it to the
dealer too (although i have already shown it to them once without much
luck).
It is just that the noise gets embarasingly loud. (Also, I have tried
the turning off of engine and starting again - but I havent been so
fortunate as the sound comes back within a minute.

Thanks for your reply,
Deepak

Thanks Vikram,

I have tried the turning off of engine and starting again - but I
havent been so fortunate as the sound comes back within a minute.
As you suggest, I will show it to the dealer too (Although i have
already shown it to them once without much luck).
And I sure hope that the chain sound goes away soon :)

Thanks for your reply,
Deepak

Thanks Krishna,

Indeed, all the symptoms you described are correct in my case.
Especially the "ghungroo" sound.
I will get the dealer to align and lubricate the chain.

I have a related question - I notice that the chain is touching the
plastic - this happens at the top side.. it is almost like the chain
is easily resting on the long plastic underneath. Is that by design?
Or should there be gap between chain and the plastic?

Thanks for your reply,
Deepak
