A few colleagues and I around Metro Detroit are organizing an Information Security Conference in downtown Detroit June 3rd thru June 4th at the Renaissance Center.  The conference is called B-Sides Detroit (bsidesdetroit.eventbrite.com or bsidesdetroit.securitybsides.org) and is part of the overall Security B-Sides conference movement. (www.securitybsides.com) Because B-Sides Detroit is free to participants the cost to run the event is bore by the organizers through sponsorship.

If you are not familiar with the B-Sides Events here is what one participant had to say about their experience at a recent B-Sides event:

"B-Sides, the way I see it, is a place where people come to share, to participate, to learn, and to expand their minds. It is a venue for collaboration, for innovation, for learning about the next big thing, and starting a conversation to enhance it. B-Sides is first and foremost about community, building and enhancing it; about establishing relationships, about building a better world. People come with an open mind, come seeking knowledge, come to talk to others about what they are working on, about problems they are solving, about their passions and projects. Conversations about things they are curious about, meeting the people they talk to online, meeting and talking to thought-leaders and people recognized industry-wide, and all standing as equals, it's an uncanny experience. There is such a high energy for positive change, and if I had one thing to say about my experience here, it is that I want to spread it everywhere. The discussions I've both had and witnessed here, I don't feel like I could have had anywhere else, and certainly not so many, in so short a time. Coming here revitalized both my interest in security, and my desire to do something amazing, not just for my sake, but to advance the community, and the industry as a whole."

But what does it mean to be a sponsor? Here are some benefits:

  •  Being part of the media conversation: As people talk about us they talk about you or at least see you.  Security B-Sides has been covered in magazines, podcasts, video casts, blogs, and even inscribed on microchips.  Get caught up in the conversation and be part of what people are talking about.
  • Brand recognition and awareness: Depending on the level of sponsorship, you may recognize your brand placement at some or all of the following: t-shirts, signage/lanyards, lunch sessions, or attendee badges. Based on your level of participation, create and custom branding may be arranged including transportation, banners, and podcast interviews.
  • Big Fish in a Small Pond: For some, sponsoring large events is not within their price range leaving them with no option for communicating their message. BSides is just the place for you! This small, community atmosphere brings together active and engaged participants who want to absorb information. Sponsoring a BSides event enables to be that big fish in a small pond and better communicate your message to an active audience.
  • Stay in touch with the industry: BSides enables its supporters and participants to identify and connect with industry leaders and voices. These participants represent the social networking of security. They are the people who you want to engage to solicit feedback and bring voice to your conversation.
  • Targeted and Direct Audience: You didn't enter the security industry selling your product to everyone the same way, so why approach events that way?  Instead of marketing to the broader "security" community connect directly with the security practitioners who write about, talk about, recommend, and implement security products and services.
  • Be associated with the next big thing: Nobody knows what the “next big thing” will be, but these events are community driven with presentations voted upon by the industry. There is no magic to how it works, but we believe that listening to the underground can help prepare you and help identify what the next big thing might be.

In terms of attendance for the Detroit edition we are still in the very early stages of establishing a final attendance estimate but our goal is between 200 and 500 attendees, and based on attendance at similar events in the Detroit Metro Area the recent past, and the response and strong support we have been seeing in the community since announcing the conference, we are on track for 200 participants at a minimum.

We expect to draw heavily from both local and regional populations of Information Security and IT professionals ranging from C-level positions in security and technology from large corporations to self-employed security consultants, and everything in between, including software and security engineers and support personnel. We are also anticipating attendance by a substantial number of university students, due to the low cost and strong student presence in the local security community. In addition to the local showing, we expect attendees from all over the nation, given the nature of the B-Sides events, and our early marketing efforts, as well as thought leaders we will have leading discussions/giving talks.

If you would like to get involved and help make this awesome event a reality or you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to ask.

Best Regards,

I just got a response back from Q1 Labs that they  won't be able to sponsor.  I haven't heard from my lower tier sponsor yet. And the other two letters I sent out I haven't heard anything back.  I will send out some follow-ups Monday.  How is your stuff going?

I got $2500 from Arbor Networks (hell yes). We might get some match from core as well... anyone else know anyone who might be willing to sponsor? I might be able to snag some from GE as well, I'm working on it.

That's awesome! I was wondering about GE just today.  I have a small sponsor that I haven't heard from that I think may come through. Other than that not much going on...

Thanks a million, Christian, I drafted an email to them, and yet still it sits in my drafts. Life-saver. Realistically, we also are in need of more big-time speakers and press. Even if companies can't fit donations into budget, press mentions will go a long way, as would sending someone to speak. It would be nice to get a speaker from Rapid7.

I am working on an "attendee" press release to send out to the universities and several security mailing lists. If anyone has any podcasting contacts, I'd love for us to get some air-time, too.

We are on the same wavelength this morning.  Rapid7 had agreed to send a speaker to my NAISG chapter in July, I will speak to them to see if they could send a speaker to BSides instead in June.

I can help out on the podcasting side.  I could do a podcast later this week and I can also reach out to the security podcasters network and see who else would like to interview us.

No bites on the sponsorship side.
