I know almost nothing about creating any animations, but I want to make
or copy one to display while user is waiting for my ASP.NET project.

I'd prefer to get a nice (free) editor to make my own with. Anyone have
a recommendation?

I like the Gimp, but I've never used it to do animated gifs.  But it looks like it does it:

Not free, but Paint Shop Pro comes with an animated GIF tool, imho probably
the best way to create animated gifs is an export from Flash.

Not really aware of any good and free tools for this.

Honestly, the only free and not open-source software I use is
Crimson Editor http://www.crimsoneditor.com/

Other than that, I usually look for free + open-source... simply
because a lot of the "free" programs out there have spyware.

Hi Guys -

Thanks for the tips. I will check them out tonight. I used PSP before
it changed from shareware to shrinkwrap. There seem to be a lot of
tools available, but the learning curves are longer than I wish.

Ah, another Crimson user!  :)  I love that tool, but you're the first person I'm met that uses it besides myself.

I've been an avid fan of it for several years now.. :) the last
version has about every feature I could ask for...

I usually suggest it to people I see using things like TextPad etc.
