Hey guys! I know this will be a duplicate email for some of you (sorry!) if you're also in the Meetup group, but I wanted to make sure I covered all my bases.

Here’s what you really need to know. September 12th, 6:30pm MT will be our next meeting, hosted by Boise CodeWorks (8455 Westpark St, Boise, ID 83704). Please RSVP on Meetup so we can get an accurate attendance count! Food and beverage is sponsored by Hedera, more on them below, plus some extra info on where the group stands today.

P.S. If you’d like to volunteer to help keep BSDG running by being a speaker or sponsoring us (or if you just really want to say hi) reach out to Alysa at al...@pineconegrove.com.

Jim McKeeth will be our speaker!

Session: Smart Contracts - The Blockchain Beyond Bitcoin
A smart contract is a program that runs on the blockchain. This session is a technical look at the blockchain and smart contracts from a programmer's perspective. We will start with the basics of the blockchain and work our way up through ERC-20, the Ethereum smart contract standard. Then we will discuss alternative blockchains and the options they provide. While smart contracts are the basis of NFTs and Distributed Finance (DiFi), this session's focus is on technology and will explore many potential uses, including an introduction to Solidity and other smart contract programming languages.

After this session you will be ready to write your first smart contract in Solidity and run it on the blockchain. There will be a short Q&A with Jim afterwards for anyone who needs more info on the topic!

BSDG intends on meeting on the second Tuesday of every month. Speakers will begin their presentation at 6:30pm MT. Keep an eye out on Meetup for exact details every month! We’re also in the process of setting up a LinkedIn page for the group! Follow us there as well: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/14302958/

We are grateful to Boise CodeWorks for their continuous support of BSDG.

To help keep this group running, there are ways you can help too!

  • We are always in need of speakers. Is there new tech you think everyone should know about? What are you an expert in? Do you want to make the lives of the organizers of your favorite group a little easier?
  • We are also in need of sponsors for food! This is an awesome way that your company can give back to the community and keep us all well fed while we learn. Please reach out if your company is willing to sponsor us or if you have leads on who we should reach out to!

To update everyone a little on what’s new, there are 4 of us making this show run at the moment. Here’s some intros to get to know us!

Alysa McLaughlin: “I’m new here with BSDG! I am in charge of our social presence, member engagement, and making sure we have speakers/sponsors lined up! I have been a project manager for 6 years, specializing in IT project management for 4 of those, and yes, I am looking for a job.

I am also a member of Project Management Institute - Western Idaho Chapter (PMIWIC) and am a volunteer on their Member Engagement Board.

In my free time, I’m a hobby game dev with far too many repos of unfinished projects. I also project manage my household of my boyfriend (Cameron Eagans, dev) and our two cats (Meep & Bread, keyboard testers/meeting supervisors).”

I am an active member and organizer of two technical meetup groups and believe in the importance of giving back to the community through networking opportunities and education.

I also am an instructor and teach people the skills needed to become software developers and cyber security professionals. As an instructor I have designed the CodeWorks curriculum to stay focused on real world needs.”

Here are my slides from last night. I added a few clarifications and made a couple corrections based on questions.

Thanks again to Boise CodeWorks for hosting, Hedera for snacks, and Alysa and everyone else for helping organize the event. It was great seeing everyone.
