Hello Team,

I have been approached by a student who is organizing 2 internships for other SEAS students this summer in the Bengal region of India. They are looking for students like you who have taken interest in international work. I’ve attached more information. The project is in public health and arsenic removal. They are eager to make a decision, so if you are interested please email the student involved in organizing the trip, Davesh Shah, as soon as possible. His email is: daves...@gmail.com You would have the opportunity to work with professors at the Bengal Engineering and Science university to do an independent fieldwork study in a rural village on arsenic remediation. The work you conduct would be alongside villagers who are exposed to deadly arsenic levels in their current water source. You would be awarded a stipend of $3,000. Below is more information.

Summary

In a joint venture between the Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania (SEAS), and Innova Materials, two internships will be provided to students interested in international development work. Located at BESU, these internships will have a coursework and fieldwork component that provides education to students on Arsenic Remediation in South Asia as well as a platform for field application. The internships also provides an opportunity to gain exposure to industry involvement in arsenic remediation and better understand the link between academia and private organizations that target sustainable development problems.

Aims

Each participating student’s experience will include course credit for education component abroad as well as an internship experience provided by Innova Materials.

1. Students will receive course credit for:

a. Lecture time provided by BESU professors

b. Practical application and fieldwork experience to test arsenic remediation devices

c. A capstone assignment for a report research and data gathered relevant to assigned field project

2. Industry involvement by Innova Materials will allow students to:

a. Conduct non-human testing of low-cost arsenic remediation devices for efficacy in the field

b. Assess cultural acceptability, practicality, and response by local residents

c. Learn about design and optimization in the context of Innova Materials’ R&D labs

-Young Yim

PS: If you're free in June, I highly suggest you consider this. They've only opened up opportunities to select students (like you)! Email Davesh for more info.
