District Commissioner's Report

Introduction:

August is the traditional start of the scouting year. Summer is fading fast and we now begin to plan for the upcoming scouting year. I hope that everyone had a pleasant and safe summer.
And now to business. There are some very important events coming up this month that I would like to discuss with you.
They are:
1. Round table
2. Popcorn
3. Scout Night
                                  So lets get started!

Round Table:

As previously reported, we will be having four round tables this year. The first of which is scheduled for Aug 19th. It is extremely important that you make every effort to attend or see to it that someone from your unit is at the meeting.
I am attaching the agenda to this email but wanted to emphasize a couple of items:

1. The meet and greet at 6:30 is of course optional but I hope that if you are able that you will come out and participate There are a number of you that I have not met yet and I look forward to talking with you. It will also be a good opportunity for you to meet our Unit Commissioner staff.
2. The breakout sessions will be geared toward providing information that is pertinent to your role.
Boy Scouts: Merit Badge
We have heard from many of our Scout Masters of problems with the current MB program. Mike
Browning, our Advancement Committee Chair, will lead the discussion and present some ideas
on how to strengthen the program, but more importantly, we hope to get your thoughts on the
problems and possible solutions to make the program better and safer for the scouts.

Cub Scouts: Join Scout Night (JSN) and changes coming in 2015
JSN - Chris will give an overview of the program and make available the packet of materials
needed to have a successful event. For "first timers" Chris will hold a more in-depth training
session for you at the end of the round table, so be sure to get your questions answered
before leaving.
Changes coming in 2015
Dramatic changes are coming to the cub scout program in 2015!!! We will not have time to
cover the breath of changes but we will give you an overview of the changes and provide you
with contact and reference material so that you can be better prepared for the new program.

Popcorn:

Chris covered this topic at length in his New River District News email on July 30. If you did not get a copy of his email let me know and I will forward you a copy. Let me highlight a couple of key points...
1. The kickoff event is scheduled for August 16 at 10:00 AM at the NRV Airport in Dublin. Your unit popcorn kernel or designee needs to be there to get the information you need in order to communicate the program to your unit
2. In order to get the 3% commission on unit sales you must attend the kickoff meeting
3. In order to get the 2% commission on unit sales you must commit to sell popcorn by going on-line by August 8 AND attend one of the Michael Beck training events this weekend.
4. If you have questions about the sale contact Phyllis Newbill, the district POC, at pnew...@vt.edu or Ginger Meier, Campmaster's POC, at ginger...@gmail.com

Join Scout Night:

This is one of the most important events of the scouting year!!! why? because it is our best opportunity to get new scouts into the program and thus keep the program alive and flourishing in the NRV. It is not only important to cub scout units but to boy scout units as well, because these new scouts are the future feeder system for the boy scout units. If we do not replenish the CS units the BS units will soon dry up. You will hear much more about JSN at the round table on Aug 19 but if you are new to this event and need help let Chris, your unit commissioner, or me know and we will make sure you have someone to mentor you through the process. Remember you are not alone.

Final Word:
In the New River District we are made up of many units, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Crews but we are one in supporting our youth. District staff is very limited. The only way we can support all of the units, and make sure that they have the information they need to execute the various programs throughout the year, is to have the help and support of volunteers at the unit level. We cannot get to every unit to deliver material so it is imperative that you or someone from your unit attend Round Tables, Popcorn Kickoff and Re-charter initial meetings. So unit leaders please take the initiative to make sure you have the information you need for your unit. Also, we need your input to identify and correct problem in the district.
