Hey guys,

So I got an email this weekend saying that the 9th Wonder wont be able to attend our meeting next Monday. Unfortunately that leaves us without any real plan.

I was approached about co-sponsoring the event below. I was thinking we could make this a part of our general meeting. We could maybe do wings and sweet tea before or after. Another idea I had was we could do a community dinner before the event to get a more community aspect for our meeting. If we want to do something different I am also open to that!

Let me know your thoughts!

Fay

"Confronting Sexual Violence on College Campuses"

World-renowned forensic psychologist, Dr. David Lisak, will be at Harvard to talk about his research on the "Undetected Rapist." Dr. Lisak has been at the forefront of cutting-edge research into why some people rape...and how ALL of us can help. I'm down for co-sponsoring this event. However, I don't really think this should be our general meeting for the month, especially considering this is our last real one before election. Could we maybe have a discussion on black identity(stemming off of the discussion the freshmen had earlier this semester)?

Whatever we decide for the meeting can we not have wings? Could we maybe get some of those beignets we got for Cultural Rhythms?

Omg. Yes. Yes. Yes. To the beignets. I don't think that this should be our topic either for the discussion. But actually, beignets.

I don't have any other suggestions for the meeting, yet.

Another idea: could we have something similar to the meeting with professor Higginbothim (or however you spell that) last year?

Yeah I agree with Crystal, we should probably try for a meeting that will bring a lot of the members together before elections.
I think ABHW slick did something on black identity for their meeting yesterday even though it was supposed to be on Wellness.

I dont really have a clear idea about this, but maybe we can do something about institutional memory within BSA. Like a blast from the past type thing or going down memory lane sorta thing .. I don't really know if this can be turned into a meeting, but it's just a thought.

Crystal: What was the Higginbotham meeting?

And yes to beignets!

I would be willing to reach out to Prof. Higginbotham but I am not sure if she will be available. We might be able to invite the Winthrop house masters as well. He and his wife are really nice and they both have been here for a while. If we go down this route of doing something like "the state of the black community, part 2" we could reach out to the other tutors to invite them to our meeting. In addition if we do stick with this idea I would think we should reach out to HASA and Haitian Alliance because they co-sponsored the event last year as well.

Dose this sound like a good direction to go?

I think it might also be a good chance to talk about the role of BSA in the community as well since it is right before elections and we want people to know the significance of our organization so that they can get excited for elections!!!!

Encourage freshmen to apply and run for board guys!!!

I think if we are going to do a meeting like that, especially in the specific direction that Tiffany suggested, then we should discuss what exactly we want to achieve from the meeting.  If the question is what is the role of BSA, then maybe we should establish amongst ourselves so we can more easily and effectively push the conversation in a direction that is beneficial.  While it was interesting to hear all the different opinions at the last state of the black community meeting, I (and many other people) left feeling like nothing was really resolved, so hopefully we can avoid that.

So I emailed a couple professors and the Winthrop housemasters but I have yet to get a response. Are there any other people you think I should email by the end of the day that you think could moderate the meeting  on a kind of last minute notice?

Im sure Tony Jack would or we could ask him for suggestions for other grad students who would want to, if grad students are okay.
