to Bryner for Ward 3

School is in session! Please make sure you are using caution as you drive around town during the week.

I am really pleased to share that the sidewalk work on 62nd Place between Landover Road and Monroe Street is nearly complete. They will need to close that section of the road Tuesday of this week to finish it and to extend the sidewalk on the other side.

For the first time ever, pedestrians will be able to walk from Landover Road straight to school, church, and other spots in Cheverly without having to walk in the street. I am so grateful to town staff who worked really hard to make this happen, coordinating with state and county offices and problem-solving to build a sidewalk in a really tricky spot. This was one of the issues that prompted me to initially run for Council in 2019, and I am 100% convinced that having a sidewalk there will save lives.

Cheverly Day

Cheverly Day is almost here! It takes a village to make Cheverly Day happen, so please get involved!

MEETINGS

(As a reminder there was no August Work Session)

September 11 Town Meeting

Agenda can be found here

You can watch recordings of all town meetings here

County Council Member Shayla Adams-Stafford

CM Adams-Stafford joined our meeting to provide some updates on her office’s work and to answer questions. If you are interested, I think it is worthwhile to watch this section of the meeting to hear about the Council Member’s priorities and goals. She discussed a Retail task Force for Hospital Hill, data centers, and resources for federal workers. CM Adams-Stafford has a number of events coming up, including a Virtual Town Hall on Wednesday. You can find more information on her facebook page.

Hospital Hill Discussion

Home Team 5 and Urban Atlantic came to give an update on the development at the former hospital. We are getting closer but not quite at the point where we will be submitting formal comment on their Preliminary Plan of Subdivision (which outlines things like stormwater management and the placement of roads and buildings. There will be more information and opportunities for resident input before that is finalized.

During Thursday’s meeting we also shared that the Council is pursuing annexation of Hospital Hill and some other parts of the industrial area south/west of Town. This is a long and detailed process, but we are optimistic that it will ultimately be successful.

Bike Trail Grant

I am so excited to share that Cheverly's MDOT proposal for a bike trail linking Hospital Hill with the Anacostia River Trail has been awarded $400,000! Establishing safe bike and pedestrian connections between Cheverly and the Bladensburg Waterfront Park has been a Town priority for a few years now, and I am grateful to Town Staff (and especially Ms. Ajah Prom) for making this happen.

Planning Board Appointment

Bryan Barnett-Woods was unanimously approved to join the Planning Board.

Ethics Ordinance

The new Code of Ethics was unanimously adopted.

Departmental Reports

Youth Town Council
Do you know a resident in grades 10-12 interested in learning more about municipal government and community engagement? Applications are open for the Cheverly Youth Town Council! Interest forms are due by 5pm on September 19. More information here.

WSSC Work
I hope that one day I can draft a newsletter that does not discuss WSSC road work, but today is not that day. The good news is that WSSC has agreed to re-do the sub-optimal work they did in filling and compacting the holes they made in the streets during their sewer line replacement project. This means there will be more construction in those areas. But once that work is done, they will finally be able to come in and do final paving. We believe that by holding WSSC accountable in this way, we are avoiding having to deal with many sinkholes in the future. The tentative schedule is below but is of course subject to change. Thank you for your patience!

Unmarked Vehicles

I’ve heard from some neighbors that there have been times when Cheverly Police officers or vehicles were mistaken for ICE activity in Town. Given the climate we’re living in, that’s completely understandable. And honestly, I’m glad we live in a place where folks are watching out for one another.

That said, I want to be very clear: Cheverly Police will not initiate or assist in immigration enforcement. You will not see CPD working with ICE. Our officers are always identifiable by their uniforms. CPD does have a few unmarked vehicles (mostly pickup trucks) because they’re sometimes needed for investigations or other enforcement work. I’ve asked CPD to cut back on using them when possible to help reduce these “false alarms,” but they can’t stop using them entirely.

With so many different law enforcement agencies in our area (some of which don’t always wear uniforms or use marked vehicles) it’s easy to see how confusion can happen. Now that we have 24/7 police coverage, our officers are more present in the community, addressing issues like traffic safety and being a visible, steady presence—especially around our schools, which feels especially important given the heartbreaking news we’ve all seen recently. If you’re ever worried you might be seeing ICE, a good first step is to check whether the people involved are wearing CPD uniforms before spreading the word.

Education Roundtable with School Board Member Aimee Olivo

Join us to hear updates from School Board Member (and Ward 3 resident!) Aimee Olivo, engage in roundtable discussions with your neighbors, and ask your questions. (Ironically, I will miss the first half as it is Back to School Night at my daughter’s school!)

  • 7:00 - 7:30 p.m. Welcome & Updates

  • 7:30 -8:10 p.m. Roundtable Discussions (in-person attendees only)

  • 8:10 - 8:30 p.m. Questions & Answers

See Click Fix

If you’re walking or driving around town and notice things that need fixing, weeding, or paving, please use See Click Fix, which is available as an app or on the town website. It’s a convenient way to report issues like potholes and code violations—and you can track the status of your request in real time. Check it out here.

Thank you for staying engaged! Please reach out with any questions, concerns, or feedback.

Best,
