to Bryner for Ward 3

Hello Ward 3! I hope everyone is having a safe and restful summer. We’ve been squashing lots of spotted lanternflies.

I know the past few months have been especially difficult for many in our community. My thoughts are with all who have lost their jobs, particularly the many Cheverly residents impacted by what's happened at USAID and the State Department. Thank you for your service—I hope this is just a temporary pause in your career journey.

Trash Pickup Schedule Update

You may have noticed that some nearby towns start trash collection earlier in the summer months to protect workers from extreme heat. Beginning Monday, Cheverly’s Public Works team will also begin pickup a bit earlier than usual.

Reminder: The official deadline for getting your trash to the curb remains 7:00 AM. If you’ve been relying on the actual pickup time rather than the deadline, please adjust accordingly. I know we all want to support the health and safety of our Public Works staff—thanks in advance for your help with this small but important change.

Public Works Building Update

A representative from Keller Construction provided an update on the new Eley Public Works Building. It’s on track for staff to begin moving in early August, with ribbon cutting planned for September.

Key updates and reminders:

  • The fencing along the hill from Town Hall to the new building will stay up until construction is complete. Washington Gas is still scheduled to install gas lines from Forest Ave.
  • Once construction wraps, the track around the field will be restored to near-original length, with disrupted sections resurfaced. A full resurfacing is a future goal.
  • The new second-floor community spaces will not be immediately available. Public Works will need time to settle into their new workflows before opening them for public use.
  • Council has long planned to explore a public art or mural project for the large field-facing wall. This process will begin once the building is complete and in use, with ample opportunity for community input and involvement.

Ethics Commission Update

Tom Ruyle, Chair of the Ethics Commission, provided an update on their internal governance document, which is now about 90% complete.

This document doesn't define ethical conduct; instead, it outlines how the Commission itself operates. The last update was in 1991, so we’re incredibly grateful to the Commission for tackling this much-needed revision. They're also working with the Town Attorney to ensure our Town Code complies with Maryland law.

Departmental Reports

Storm & Power Outages:
Following last month’s severe storm, which left some residents without power for days, Town staff reached out to Pepco to better understand their response process. Critical infrastructure like hospitals and safety hazards are prioritized first, followed by police stations, senior facilities, and then larger outages. Crews were working in two 12-hour shifts, and several came from as far as Tennessee and Michigan.

While the Mayor, Council, and staff have limited influence over Pepco’s speed, we appreciate staff for organizing a cooling center at Town Hall and for continuing to strengthen ties with Pepco to improve future coordination.

Walgreens Building:
Staff have been in touch with the Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation (PGCEDC) about the future of the now-closed Walgreens. While such properties typically transition to similar businesses, another pharmacy seems unlikely in this case. Both PGCEDC and the Town Administrator are trying to make contact with the building’s owner.

Cheverly Business Roundtable:
Mr. Galloway is planning a Cheverly Business Roundtable in partnership with the Department of Permitting and Inspections and PGCEDC to better support our local businesses.

Leadership Cheverly (Coming This Fall):
Town staff will soon launch a Leadership Cheverly program for residents interested in learning how municipal government operates. Stay tuned!

Cheverly Police Academy:
CPD is also planning a Cheverly Police Academy—an opportunity to better understand the department’s work and the challenges officers face. This is not a training program, but rather an informational one. More details to come.

Public Safety Updates:
CPD has reported an uptick in car rummagingDUIs, and calls related to domestic violence.
Resources for domestic violence assistance are available here: https://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/departments-offices/family-services/domestic-violence-assistance.

Boyd Park Playground:
The Boyd Park Playground renovations are complete! Many thanks to Public Works for the upgrade. A ribbon-cutting is in the works—but the park is open for play now!

Future Agenda Items

At our July 24 Worksession, we’ll host:

  • Representatives from SHA/MDoT to discuss traffic concerns
  • WMATA representative to talk about recent bus service changes

Other upcoming items:

  • Staff are coordinating with School Board Member Aimee Olivo (a Ward 3 resident!) to schedule a special meeting for residents to ask questions and share concerns about PGCPS.
  • We’re also planning to welcome newly elected District 5 County Councilmember Shayla Adams-Stafford to a future meeting.

Meeting Time Changes?
We’ve discussed shifting the start time for both Town Meetings and Work Sessions to 7:00 PM, to reduce confusion and end meetings earlier. I don’t believe our Town Code requires a specific start time, so this change would only need a Council vote. Stay tuned for updates.

Odds and Ends

A reminder: the town offers a great tool called SeeClickFix, available as an app or on the town website. It’s a convenient way to report issues like potholes and code violations—and you can track the status of your request in real time. Check it out here.

A Reminder re: Communications

Please remember:

  • Town staff and Council do not monitor the Cheverly Exchange. I mostly use it to get rid of my kids’ old toys.
  • For any town-related issueplease reach out directly.
  • For public utilities, contact them first when possible.

Need police assistance?

  • For emergencies or crimes in progress: Call 911
  • For non-urgent matters: Call the non-emergency line at 301-352-1200

Why not contact CPD directly?
Per CPD:

  • Prince George’s County’s Public Safety Communications (PSC) serves as the county’s public safety answering point (PSAP) for all calls for service. Even those agencies within the county that are self-dispatched receive their calls through the PSAP and all systems are interconnected.
  • Having calls dispatched through this central location protects not only the community, but our officers.
  • Every call for service is recorded, and officers’ response and locations are constantly monitored by the police dispatcher.
  • It is imperative that calls for service adhere to established protocols correspond with national standards.
