MEETINGS
September 25 Work Session

Tad Aburn / Environmental Justice Action Team (EJAT)
Tad Aburn returned to present on the Environmental Justice Action Team (EJAT). He always brings a wealth of information about efforts to improve Cheverly’s air quality, and I encourage anyone interested to read through his full presentation in the agenda supplemental packet. Two key links are below—the first has some especially fun and enlightening interactive maps, including one where you can check real-time air quality in your area:
Green Infrastructure Committee
Following the EJAT presentation, the Green Infrastructure Committee shared an overview of their work and a proposal to create a new category of town committee, as they have not been operating under the advisory committee guidelines the Council unanimously adopted last year. Mayor Watson requested a small subcommittee to explore the proposal with the GIC; CMs Garces, Tansey, and LeGloahec volunteered. I’m interested to see if this approach will prove more productive than the past 18 months of discussions and formal mediation.
Keller Construction
To say we’ve been disappointed in Keller, the contractor for the Eley Public Works Building, would be an understatement. After three different project managers cycled out, we’ve now been assigned the company’s COO to see the project through. Unfortunately, completion has once again been delayed. The biggest disappointment for me is that the fence along the hill won’t come down before Cheverly Day. We also had to postpone the public ribbon-cutting ceremony, as the building still lacks elevator access and running water. A small private ceremony with the Eley family was held, and we’ll schedule a town-wide celebration once the building is fully complete and accessible. Despite the setbacks, I remain very excited for the opening; the second-floor community space in particular is beautiful and will be a tremendous resource for Cheverly.
Youth Town Council Appointment
Huge congratulations to Kaitlin Rowe, Ward 3’s nominee for Youth Town Council! Kaitlin is a student at DuVal High School and has already stepped up as a leader in her school and community. I’m thrilled to have her represent Ward 3.
Other Topics
WSSC
I’ve had a few questions about why WSSC has been working in Ward 3 for what feels like forever. I’ve shared updates on this before, but here’s where things stand: after WSSC’s sewer work, their subcontractor filled the holes with temporary patches. Our Public Works staff noticed sinkhole activity and discovered the holes weren’t properly compacted. WSSC initially disputed the standard, but after testing, they admitted the work wasn’t up to par.
They are now redoing the fill and compaction before final paving. While the process has been long and frustrating, pushing for accountability was the right call—otherwise, we’d be dealing with sinkholes in just a few years. Other towns have had similar issues, and WSSC has since updated training and testing for subcontractors.
Once this rework is finished, final paving will follow, and the project should finally be complete.
See Click Fix
If you’re walking or driving around town and notice things that need fixing, weeding, or paving, please use See Click Fix, which is available as an app or on the town website. It’s a convenient way to report issues like potholes and code violations—and you can track the status of your request in real time. Check it out here.
Thank you for staying engaged! Please reach out with any questions, concerns, or feedback.
