Hello! I created this Google Group to share information about Ward 3 and Cheverly. If you would like to be removed from this list, please use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of this email.
Hello Ward 3! Happy New Year! It’s always at times of extremes when Cheverly shines, and this past week of weather was no exception. Thank you to Public Works for doing an EXCEPTIONAL job clearing the streets, and thank you to residents who kept them fed and also rolled with changes to trash pickup schedules and helped their neighbors with backdoor trash pickup. And a big shout out to all the kids (and kids at heart) that made delightful snowpeople, snow angels, and forts!
Urgent Essential Water Use Only Advisory LIFTED
· Literally as I was typing this newsletter WSSC lifted the “Essential Water Use Only” Advisory
· I am slightly disappointed, because how often do you get to say “if it’s yellow, let it mellow” in official communications?!
· Keep an eye on the WSSC page in case this changes, since it’s about to get very cold again, but hopefully we are in the clear.
Hospital Hill Annexation
· As I mentioned last month, on December 19 Bladensburg voted in favor of their annexation attempt.
· As a result, the Town has filed two lawsuits against the Bladensburg. Press Release here.
· The Town is also going to file an Open Meetings Act Complaint following the way that the December 19 hearing was conducted: only Bladensburg resident were allowed inside the building, IDs were checked at the door, and restrooms were not made available to the many Cheverly residents livestreaming the meeting outside in the cold.
· I’ll continue to update on this issue as I am able. As a reminder, I am not allowed to disclose information shared in closed meetings, but I am committed to sharing as much as I am allowed to.
· Thank you to everyone for your continued support!
MEETINGS
January 9 Town Meeting
Agenda can be found here.
You can watch recordings of all town meetings here.
· Resolutions
o Council approved two resolutions appointing election supervisors and clerks for the May 2025 election.
· Revenue Authority Citations
o The Revenue Authority has agreed to void citations and refund fines for citations issued in May and November of 2024. A communication will be coming soon with more information, in the meantime you can contact me directly and I will connect you with the appropriate person.
· Budget Calendar
o The Town Administrator shared a draft calendar for the FY26 budget process. Councilmembers need to provide their budgetary priorities next month, so please let me know if you have input on what should (or should not) be funded in this upcoming budget cycle.
· Police Department Updates
o We have had 24/7 policing for two weeks! As of Thursday, 100% of calls for service that came from the Town have been responded to by Cheverly Police Department.
o The Chief and Assistant Chief are restructuring a bit to create a Lieutenant position that will provide experience and additional command supervision.
o Staff got a great deal on new police vehicles and upfitting.
o The Department is participating in the Maryland State Police Polar Plunge in the Chesapeake to raise money for the Special Olympics. VERY regrettably, I have family in town that weekend and cannot participate! Their team is the Cheverly Chivers (pronounced Shivers). Be sure to cheer them on!

Have you thought about getting more involved around town? We know that people love the sense of community here in Cheverly, and so many of the good things around town are driven by volunteers! Some opportunities:
Planning Board: Exploring future development plans and opportunities in and around town and advising Town Council on related issues
Recreation Council: Planning and executing some of the town’s favorite events, like the Halloween Parade, Easter Egg Hunt, Pickleball Tournaments, and Flea Markets
CERT (Cheverly Emergency Response Team): Responding to and planning for emergencies and natural disasters, supporting large scale town events to ensure everyone’s safety
Board of Elections: Planning and running town-wide elections
Police Chief’s Advisory Board: Connecting with residents around public safety issues and policies and making recommendations to the Chief of Police about community’s articulated needs and perspectives
Cheverly Day Committee: Planning and executing Cheverly Day
If any of these sound like your cup of tea, please let me know! I’d be happy to connect you with the right folks for a conversation.
Do you have a talent you are interested in sharing with the town, but it doesn’t line up exactly with one of these? Get in touch and we’ll see if there isn’t a town org or ad hoc committee that would work.
