Hello! I created this Google Group to share information about Ward 3 and Cheverly. If you would like to be removed from this list, please use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of this email.
Hello Ward 3. Right up at the top, a reminder that if your home, yard, or other property suffered damage from Monday’s water main break and you have not already been in contact with WSSC Customer Advocate David Wilkins, please call WSSC at 301-206-4002 to report the damage and begin the process to remedy it. If you do not receive an adequate response after calling that number, please send me an email and we will elevate the issue to WSSC leadership.
MEETINGS
March 13 Meeting Summary
Agenda can be found here.
You can watch recordings of all town meetings here.
Swearing in of Chief Morris
On Thursday night, we formally swore in Chief Morris as permanent Police Chief! I’m thrilled he agreed to stay on; the progress made since he joined has been remarkable. Thanks to all who attended, and special thanks to Deputy Chief Krauss for the amazing cupcakes!
Homestead Tax Credit Ordinance
This was the third reader of the Homestead Tax Credit Ordinance, which passed unanimously. This measure raises the Homestead Tax Credit from $50 to $150.
More information on the Homestead Tax Credit.
Kudos to Councilmember Dalaker for his dedication in making this happen!
Financial Update
The Town Accountant provided an overview of the budget through January, reporting no red flags. Special thanks to Mr. Galloway for arranging this briefing—town finances can be tricky to interpret due to factors like the Eley Building construction and ARPA spending.
Board of Elections
The Board of Elections is working on multiple things in advance of this year’s election (May 5) including exploring ways to make voting more accessible, encourage more voter registration, and publicize voting for 16- and 17-year-olds.
The next Board of Elections meeting will be March 21 at 5:30.
A reminder: Some absentee ballot forms had to be corrected because of incorrect birth year entries. Remember, you were (probably) not born in 2025!
You can find more information or request an absentee ballot online here.
Boyd Park Flooring
The Council voted unanimously to install corkeen flooring at Boyd Park. Woodchips pose accessibility issues, and rubber is environmentally harmful.
Corkeen was the most expensive option, and Councilmembers expressed concern about the cost. The mayor proposed delaying the Ward 4 Cheverly sign project (which she has been requesting for six years now) to help cover it. I appreciate the mayor's willingness to find a thoughtful budget solution; it’s easy to express concerns about the budget but much harder to actually identify places to cut back.
During strategic planning, we identified accessibility as a core town value, and I’m proud we made a choice that reflects that commitment.
Public Safety Cameras
Chief Morris presented a memo outlining plans to add security cameras with license plate reading technology to certain areas.
Some Ward 3 residents have voiced concerns about the civil rights and equity implications of these surveillance tools. I shared a resident’s suggestion for a hearing or review board to approve new technologies before implementation.
I believe cameras make sense in targeted areas like Trent Street, known for illegal dumping of tires and stolen cars. However, I have concerns about placing cameras at both ends of Cheverly Avenue. If this topic interests you, please reach out—resident input will be essential as we draft related policies.
Eley Building Update
Construction on the Eley Building has faced some permitting delays but remains on track for completion by mid-June. Mr. Brayman hopes to host an open house before the end of April—stay tuned!
Odds and Ends
Narcan Training
There will be community Narcan training on March 24 in the evening. I did this training last year and it was incredibly valuable. More info here!
