Hello! I created this Google Group to share information about Ward 3 and Cheverly. If you would like to be removed from this list, please use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of this email.
Hello Ward 3! I know that this is an uncertain time for my fellow federal employees and am sending positive thoughts to everyone for minimal negative impacts.
If you’re at tomorrow’s Community Meet & Greet at the Legion, stop by and say hi!
Hospital Hill Annexation
· You may have seen that the County Redevelopment Authority has filed its own legal action against Bladensburg. More info here.
· Public discussions on this matter must remain limited due to the ongoing litigation. The town will continue to send updates via News & Announcements.
MEETINGS
January 23 Worksession
Agenda can be found here.
You can watch recordings of all town meetings here.
· Budget
o Mayor & Council received a financial update from our town accountant. It is difficult to accurately forecast spending vs revenue mid-year because most of our tax revenue comes in early in the fiscal year, while spending is spread out throughout the year. There were no major red flags discussed, though I will note that our speed camera revenue is lower than expected, as only 52% of citations issued have been paid
· Hometown Heroes
o Resident Gary Beale introduced a potential new program called Hometown Heroes, where families can honor their loved ones who are veterans by displaying their photos on either a garden flag or a utility pole banner.
o Staff is investigating more about the initiative. If this kind of program that might be of interest to you please keep an eye out for more information!
· Stop Sign Cameras
o The town is participating in a pilot testing the possibility of adding stop sign cameras at certain intersections in town. The information presented by the company (Obvio) was very interesting—at certain intersections a majority of cars did not come to a complete stop.
o This company has been installing stop sign cameras at a number of local municipalities.
o The presentation made it clear that the company has a strong emphasis on education, and making sure that residents know what it means to come to a complete stop. We watched videos of many vehicles rolling through stop signs, particularly when making a right turn.
o The company has the ability to customize the cameras so that the town can decide what severity of infraction will receive citations. This will avoid residents receiving citations in error.
o The stop sign cameras will not issue citations until the town has had a hearing and Council has voted; there will be at least one more month of testing before that happens.
o Potential locations in Ward 3 that are being tested are the intersections of 63rd Ave/62nd/Kilmer, 63rdAve/Inwood, and Cheverly Ave/Forest Rd.
· Policy Working Group
o Two of our community groups requested more time to review the Advisory Committee/Community Organization/Grants/Newsletter/Facilities Usage set of policies, so the deadline for feedback on these has been extended.
o You can see drafts of these policies in the worksession supplemental materials.
o The policies will be finalized and approved at our February worksession.
o There is a meeting for all advisory committees and community organizations on Thursday, January 30th at 6:30pm on Zoom. If you feel you should have received information about this meeting and haven’t, please let me know.
· Election Judges
o Mayor & Council don’t usually vote on Resolutions during worksessions but, due to timing, on Thursday night we voted to appoint six election judges for the May 5 town election. Thank you to Bambi Harmon for agreeing to serve again for Ward 3!
· Town Administrator Updates
o The Town Administrator reminded everyone about our town non-intervention ordinance, which outlines the town’s role in terms of questions of immigration status. You can read the ordinance here. You can find additional resources here and here.
o AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile have all been reviewing cell phone coverage in Cheverly in an effort to identify solutions for reception issues, particularly in the north end of Ward 3. These companies are preparing reports and recommendations for the town and I will report on these when we receive them.
o The efforts to create a pedestrian path between 63rd Place and the Kilmer Park Arboretum has been delayed; efforts to ensure the path is ADA-accessible have caused concerns with permitting and costs. Staff is investigating potential solutions.

Have you thought about getting more involved around town? We know that people love the sense of community here in Cheverly, and so many of the good things around town are driven by volunteers! Some opportunities:
Planning Board: Exploring future development plans and opportunities in and around town and advising Town Council on related issues
Recreation Council: Planning and executing some of the town’s favorite events, like the Halloween Parade, Easter Egg Hunt, Pickleball Tournaments, and Flea Markets
CERT (Cheverly Emergency Response Team): Responding to and planning for emergencies and natural disasters, supporting large scale town events to ensure everyone’s safety
Board of Elections: Planning and running town-wide elections
Police Chief’s Advisory Board: Connecting with residents around public safety issues and policies and making recommendations to the Chief of Police about community’s articulated needs and perspectives
Cheverly Day Committee: Planning and executing Cheverly Day
If any of these sound like your cup of tea, please let me know! I’d be happy to connect you with the right folks for a conversation.
Do you have a talent you are interested in sharing with the town, but it doesn’t line up exactly with one of these? Get in touch and we’ll see if there isn’t a town org or ad hoc committee that would work.
A Reminder re: Communications
Nobody from town staff or council formally checks the Cheverly Exchange. I primarily use it when I am trying to offload my kids’ old toys. If you have a town-related question or if you want us to know something, please get in touch directly. If you have questions or concerns about a public utility, please try contacting them first.
If you need immediate police assistance, or want to report a crime in progress, please call 911. The county dispatcher will send Cheverly police if they are available, or will send County police. If you need a response from police that does not need to happen in a timely manner, please call the non-emergency line at 301.352.1200. Again, this will send either Cheverly police or County police depending on availability.
Town Hall can be reached at 301.773.8360. Public Works is at 301.773.2666. The police department (for administrative questions, NOT for reporting a crime or seeking assistance) is 301.341.1055.
