I agree with Hiren. Zion is much warmer and more humid than Bryce. You want to start early and be done with things.

Also, I am sure EB knows this, but you can't take cars inside the park, so you need to park outside and take the shuttle and go inside. Plan accordingly and try to be early to get parking spots in Springfield.

Zion Narrows Checklist

Proper footwear
Walking stick (definitely recommended- You can buy one there)
Fleece or synthetic fiber layers - avoid cotton
Dry suit for hiking during colder months
Food and Water - depending on the conditions, it can get humid in the canyon.
Flashlight or headlamp
Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses...if you are prone to sunburn
Dry bag or plastic bags to keep stuff from getting wet

If you are not sure of your shoes, and for dry suit, socks, walking sticks, you can rent from a company just outside the park (as EB/Hiren pointed out)

There is a wonderful documentary you can watch about it on Netflix and is shown in the IMAX theater in Zion I believe

There are many on Netflix. Here's one I have seen
Scenic National Parks: Zion and Bryce (2009)

The one shown in the IMAX theater is different (I double-checked, so apologies) and you can see the trailer here:

CBNM alert

May not directly impact your route, but better to check.

So when you leave Rt 89 onto UT state route 12 for Bryce you are going to see Red Canyon, and you will pass by this 'hole-in-the-rock'
In general, UT route 12 is considered among the top 10 most scenic roads in America, but the most scenic bits are between Escalante and Boulder, much further east. Dunno if you guys will hv time!

@Deepak: Yes...I suspect you will two chances - one going and one coming.

And I agree....more time you spend in the parks and forest area, the better. Try earlier even, so that you have all daylight hours in the park area.

9. Work the Golden Hours

I chatted with one photographer recently who told me that he never shoots during the day – his only shooting times are around dawn and dusk – because that’s when the light is best and he find that landscapes come alive.

These ‘golden’ hours are great for landscapes for a number of reasons – none the least of which is the ‘golden’ light that it often presents us with. The other reason that I love these times is the angle of the light and how it can impact a scene – creating interesting patterns, dimensions and textures.

And I was telling EB dawn and dusk are the best times for seeing the beauty of Bryce Canyon and photography (as long as there are no clouds)
