I'd assume it's a scam until proven otherwise. Folks trying to get private information from you so they can turn you upside down and steal your lunch money as it trickles out of your pockets.
If you had answered, they might have sounded plausible enough to get you to "confirm" your name and address before telling them your bank account and routing information, or credit card number for "future automated payments."
Coup de gras would be asking you to give your account PIN number while on the phone, or they'd ask you to tell them the expiration date and 3 digit number on the back of your credit card,"for billing purposes."
The real company will contact you by paper mail.
