This is a really neat idea! We had our candy chute deployed so we could pass out treats from a safe distance but had no trick or treaters show up. But if we knew when / where there was a parade happening, maybe we could pass out treats there?

Neighbors:

Last year, during Halloween 2020, someone organized a micro parade of parents and little kids, and walked around a few streets in the Bryan park area and many of the people on my street and on Palmer, either stood outside or sat in lawn chairs and cheered and waved the children with the costumes. We were all at a safe distance and were wearing masks.

And, then, it occurred to me: How great it would be to organize and unofficial, parade next Halloween to celebrate Dia del Muerte and Halloween with a neighborhood parade.

Them I had this vision of a group of people walking the streets manipulating a big puppet of the skeleton of a Xoloitzcuintli dog, and behind the puppeteers would walk the children.

Ok, so this vision has a precedent. My sister lives in Florida and there is an annual Day of the Dead parade that is all human powered, humans marching, musicians marching, and floating pulled and powered by humans, and she used to make puppets for this parade.

I know that there are many creative people in the Bryan Park neighborhood and there are puppeteers in greater Bloomington.  I am just wondering if there might be interest in organizing a Dia del Muertos parade for November 1 of 2021?

It could be a public celebration that both celebrates the neighborhood and children and both Irish (Halloween) and Mexican (Dia del Muertos) culture.

Thoughts and input solicited

Dias de los Muertos..
🙂
Taught this in public school for years in my art classes.
It also ties right in with our idea of memorial day because for those that participate in this celebration in Mexico, it’s a day of  honoring your family and your ancestors.

See in the neighborhood who might be interested in participating…

Hello,

My family is new to the Bryan Park neighborhood, but Día de Muertos is right up our alley :) I’m not sure how big, or what direction the neighborhood wants to go with the idea, but a few different ideas pop into my head about how to get connected with the larger community. My husband is part of the IU mariachi and has been on the city’s Latino/Hispanic Commission. I used to work at La Casa and know that different student organizations have hosted events to paint calavera faces. It could be fun to paint faces. Anyway, no matter what direction this goes, my family is interested in participating.

Thanks!
