On November 27, 2019, the album's lead single, "Heartless", was released digitally on music stores and streaming services.[44] The song was noticeably produced by American record producer Metro Boomin. At the time of its release, it was the Weeknd's first solo single since 2018's "Call Out My Name" from the EP My Dear Melancholy (2018). The single peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and became the Weeknd's fourth song to top the chart, with it also becoming Metro Boomin's second chart topper that he produced.[45] Its music video was released on December 3, 2019.[46]

"Blinding Lights" was released digitally on music stores and streaming services on November 29, 2019, as the album's second single.[47] The song peaked at number one in 22 countries, including the United States and Canada, where it became the Weeknd's fifth number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100 for four and seven weeks respectively. It also became his first number-one single in Germany for ten weeks, United Kingdom for eight weeks, and Australia for eleven weeks, thus making it his biggest hit single to date.[48][49][50] Its music video is set in the aftermath of "Heartless"' visual and was released on January 21, 2020.[51] It would later become the Billboard No. 1 Song of All Time in 2021.[52]

"In Your Eyes" was released to rhythmic contemporary radio on March 24, 2020, as the album's third single.[53] The song peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.[54] Its music video follows the storyline of the previously released visuals and was released on March 23, 2020.[55]

"Save Your Tears" was released to contemporary hit radio in Europe as the album's fourth single on August 9, 2020.[56][57] It was later released to US rhythmic contemporary radio on November 24, 2020.[58] Following the remix with Ariana Grande, the song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.[54] The music video for the song follows the storyline of the previously released visuals and was released on January 5, 2021.[59]

On December 5, 2019, the Weeknd performed "Heartless" for the first time on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert[60] with "Blinding Lights" receiving its debut performance the following day on the same show.[61] Both performances received positive reactions from critics and audiences, and were compared to those done by Michael Jackson and Prince in the past.[62] On January 22, 2020, "Blinding Lights" was performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.[63] Tesfaye's appearance during the performance on the show was inspired by the events that occurred within the aforementioned single's music video, which was released shortly before his live performance.[64] For his performance on the March 7, 2020, episode of Saturday Night Live,[65] Tesfaye performed a comedic track alongside Kenan Thompson and Chris Redd, made specifically for the show, titled "On the Couch", and the songs: "Blinding Lights" and the previously unreleased "Scared to Live", the latter of which featured electronic musician Oneohtrix Point Never and interpolates "Your Song" by Elton John.[66]

Throughout 2020, various other performances of the album's songs occurred during major televised events like the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, the 2020 Time 100 primetime event, the American Music Awards of 2020.[67][68][69]

On April 7, 2020, a music video for the album's closing track "Until I Bleed Out" was released.[79] The visuals for the song continue the themes found present throughout the promotional material for the album.[80]

On July 22, 2020, a music video for the album's fifth track "Snowchild" was released.[81] The animated visuals for the song continue the events of the previous After Hours music videos and also showcases the Weeknd during the six different musical stages of his career.[82]

Another virtual experience collaboration occurred with Spotify during August 2020 as well.[106] This experience titled "Alone With Me", allowed users to interact with an AI based on the Weeknd in a highly personalized manner.[107] In the experience, the Weeknd AI would discuss with the user their stats in regards to Tesfaye's music, and play their most listened to songs from After Hours while the interaction occurred.[108]

On July 26, 2022, it was announced that Tesfaye would collaborate with Universal Parks & Resorts on an After Hours-themed haunted house, titled The Weeknd: After Hours Nightmare, for that year's Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Florida and Hollywood. The house is set to be based on and feature elements of the videos and short film from the album, and will be soundtracked by the songs "After Hours", "In Your Eyes", "Heartless", "Blinding Lights", the solo version of "Save Your Tears", and "Too Late".[111]

After Hours debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 444,000 album-equivalent units, which included 275,000 pure album sales. It is the Weeknd's fourth number-one album, and marks the biggest first week sales of 2020 for an album at the time.[149] Additionally, after the album's first week of availability, all 14 songs charted on the US Billboard Hot 100, with ten of them in the top 40, led by "Blinding Lights" at number one, and "In Your Eyes" debuting the highest, at number 16.[150] The album remained at number one on the Billboard 200 in its second week with 138,000 album-equivalent units, of which 47,000 were pure album sales. It is the Weeknd's third consecutive album to top the chart for multiple weeks.[151] In its third week, the album remained at number one on the Billboard 200 with 90,000 album-equivalent units (including 23,000 pure album sales). Becoming the first album to lead for three consecutive weeks since Post Malone's Hollywood's Bleeding (2019).[152] In its fourth week, After Hours earned 75,000 album-equivalent units (including 20,000 pure album sales), remaining at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It's the first album to notch four consecutive weeks since Drake's Scorpion (2018).[153] After Hours was the fourth best selling album of 2020 with 2.032 million album-equivalent units, including 480,000 pure copies in the US.[154] In 2021, After Hours was the tenth best selling album of the year in the United States, moved 1,281,000 album-equivalent units, including 99,000 pure copies.[155]

"After Hours" is a 1969 song written by Lou Reed[3] and originally performed by the Velvet Underground, "about a timid person watching others having fun and wishing they could join in".[4] It is the tenth and final track on their self-titled third album.[5] It is one of few songs with lead vocals by drummer Maureen Tucker, as Lou Reed stated the song was "so innocent and pure" that he could not possibly sing it himself. Tucker's vocals are accompanied by acoustic and bass guitar. The style of the lyrics and the music is somewhat reminiscent of Tin Pan Alley songs of the 1930s.[2]

In 2014, Universal Music Enterprises held a contest in collaboration with Genero to create an official music video for the song.[6] From 120 submissions, the video by Choking Monkey Productions was picked as the winner and subsequently uploaded to the Velvet Underground Vevo YouTube channel.[7][8]

I've had it on repeat multiple times a day since it's release, it never gets old. Insane production and vocals. The intro leading up to the beat drop is the best thing I've ever heard in music. The chorus is perfect. The outro is perfect. This song is flawless and might be the best song I'll ever hear (unless he somehow manages to top himself yet again). And I'm saying this is a massive fan of Trilogy and Kiss Land thinking he'd never top the songs on there. Fucking incredible

This, like so many songs by The Sisters of Mercy, is another very sensual one.It deals with the whole idea of love being over in the morning -- "2 o'clock in the morning" -- something also expressed in 'Some Kind Of Stranger'. This also is a precursor to 'Some Kind Of Stranger' with the use of the endearment "angel", in reference, of course, to the girl with whom the singer has eloped with. The concept of dying sexual emotions is furthered by how the singer commands the girl to "Get up off the floor", meaning that she was being sexual submissive to him, and to put her clothes on, since the so called "love" is over. Then again, like so many of their songs, this song contains deeper meaning than just the rather obvious sexual ones. "One more night spent on your mirror" refers to how the singers "lover" is shallow, concerned more about her appearance than personality. "Black Maria" is a British term referring to the police van that transports criminals to jail; here, the way the singer uses it could be interpreted in multiple ways, but I think it's meaning is that the girl is like a Black Maria, carrying the singer away to some sort of psychological prison. "This stuff so strange and lonely England fades away/In your eyes" -- the singer acknowledges that what they had what empty and shallow, yet the outside world seems to disappear in the moment of such intimacy, regardless of how fake and temporary it is in the end. "Ninety-four degrees through the stillness, through the heat/The cars go by on Fifth" -- 94 degrees Fahrenheit is the average internal temperature of the human body, so the singer is essentially referencing the heat emanating from the other person, yet life is still going on outside of this elopement, since while time is frozen to "stillness" for the singer, cars are still moving and people are still going about. And since the love is over and there's nothing left "It's time for us to go/Let's take a ride".

The other comments are very interesting and I agree. I Didn't know what a "Black Maria" is, thanks for clearing that. I want to mention in addition that this a moody, brooding menacing song and that the lyrics and the music fit perfectly to each other. You can imagine a moist cold night and a dry dusty heat at the same time (due to the deep monotonous bass and the western guitar sound). I'm sure the lyrics deal with sex (without much emotion) and drugs. So it bears some Rock'n Roll in the classic sense. But without doubt it's one of the Sisters' finest songs and one of my all time favorites in general. Let's take a ride.
