when I open a new tab, a bar at the bottom of the screen pops up. It contains a link to the extensions menu, and the 'adjust chrome' button. Does anyone know how I can remove this bar?

Are you talking about Clear New Tab? Can you give a screenshot of your new tab?

It appeared on my machine now too. It's a new feature in Chrome. It's technically outside of the new tab, so Clear New Tab can't remove it. But there's still a way to remove it: Click on "Customize Chrome", a sidebar will appear, then click on "Show footer on New Tab page" in it.
