I'm trying to add a PNG and/or JPG file to use as my theme background on MacOS, but its not working (not even when I click on "Preview"). Are these files not supported?

Are you talking about Clear New Tab? I tested it and everything seems to be working fine except preview of links. Both jpg and png are supported. Here is what you can try: 

1. Select "One background" mode.

2. Click on the image in the "Backgrounds" section.

3. Click on the  "Set selected" button.

4. Open new tab and see if the image is there.
