Greetings,

I installed brownie on my intel Mac running OS X. When I try to load
my nexus file I get a Terminal message that states, " unknown required
load command 0x80000022" . This happens even when I try to load the
parrot.nex file from the Bodega Phylogenetics workshop wiki that is
associated with Sam Price's tutorial.

I have attempted to do a reinstall. When I try this I get an Installer
message that states, "cp: /Applications/Brownie: Permission denied".

Not sure where to go from here.

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Do you have administrator permission on your Mac? By default, brownie gets installed in /usr/bin, which requires admin permission to add things to (/usr/local/bin would be better, but not all Macs have that folder).

Best,
Brian

Thanks for the response Brian.

Yes, I do have administrator permission. I also took the computer over
to our Information Technology and Services department and they
reinstalled Brownie by doing an AppleScript installation.

Unfortunately, when I attempt to load a file and then type "showtree",
I still get a "dyld: unknown required load command 0x80000022"
message.

Any other suggestions will, of course, be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Jim

If you are installing via the command line, try prefixing installation
commands with "sudo", which will run the command as the root user (and
requires the root password).

Hmm. What OS are you running (10.3, 10.5, etc.)? It's possible that Brownie's not working on an older OS, in which case we should try recompiling (though you should feel free to do this yourself, if you have xcode and gsl installed).

Thanks,
Brian

PS: Thanks for the sudo suggestion, Conrad.

Thank you Brian and Conrad,

I am running OS X 10.4.11.

I don't believe that I can get xcode for this OS, which I tried to do
in order to attempt using the Brownie package for R (no success there
either).

I'll poke around for an old computer to compile on (though someone else, please feel free to do so or give suggestions on flags to pass to compile for older architectures). In the meantime, if it's a fast run (something that will take at most a day or two) you can send me a batch file and I'll run it locally -- think of it as a very poorly designed web interface. On the other hand, maybe this will justify an upgrade to your department/dean....

Hi Brian,

I updated to OS X 10.6.3 and things are now running just fine.

I appreciate your time, and look forward to getting this data
analyzed.

I used an earlier version of your program a couple of years ago, and
the paper was published earlier this year.

W. James Cooper, & Scott J. Steppan. 2010. Developmental Constraint on
the Evolution of Marsupial Forelimb Morphology. Australian Journal of
Zoology. 58(1): 1-15

You also provided generous assistance at that time, for which I was
likewise grateful. Thanks again.

Congratulations on the new position. Enjoy!

Jim
