Mark your calendars NOW!

Behind the Scenes of MOOCs—Presented by China Education Symposium
(Co-hosts: Brown Chinese Reading Group & Brown CSSA /Echo Symposium)

In this event, the guests from China Education Symposium will share how they became involved with Massive Open Online Courses. They will take you inside the office of HarvardX and introduce the production process of MOOCs. China Education Symposium is an organization that promotes conversation and practice related to China’s education by connecting and supporting young practitioners, scholars, policy-makers and other relevant parties. It was founded by a group of students at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Members of CES are involved with educational organizations in both China and the U.S.

Time: 4pm, January 25th (Sat)
Location: TBD (on Brown campus)
Language: English

Panel speakers:
  • Junjie Liu
I graduated from the Technology, Innovation and Education program at Harvard Graduate School of Education. I'm a fervent believer in the power of education in changing the world as well as the power of technology in changing education. The education issues of China's underserved children and higher education intrigue me the most. I'm interested in all sorts of new media and technology, MOOCs in particular. As a MOOC developer at HarvardX, I sincerely hope it will bring conducive change to China's higher education landscape.

  • Huihan Huang
I am a recent graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Education’s International Education Policy program. I first became interested in Massive Open Online Courses for the potential they have to increase equity in education. Since 2005 I have been exposed to the realities rural students face in China through my volunteer teaching experiences in rural Yunnan and Sichuan. I have also spent my high school and college years volunteering underserved school here. Because of my experiences I feel that MOOCs have a unique ability to reach these students who would otherwise not have the chance to access these materials. Because of this, I am currently helping to develop a MOOC on Chinese history taught by professor Bol and professor Kirby.

  • Xiaodi Chen
With a belief in the large social impact that investing in early childhood education and education technology has, I came to the Harvard Graduate School of Education to study Human Development and Psychology. During my year at Harvard, I turned from a MOOC learner to a MOOC maker and was greatly struck by the potential of online education. I hope that with the flourishing of online education, we are able to truly embrace the life-long learning culture.

  • Yiran Zhao
Yiran Zhao is a research assistant at Harvard University. She is evaluating the impact of flipped classroom models that use MOOC materials in Harvard College. She graduated from the International Education Policy program at Harvard Graduate School of Education last year. Her main research interests are rural education in developing countries and program evaluation. In CES, she mainly deals with publicity and branding issues.

Looking forward to your participation!

Best regards,
Xuan Zhao

Unlocking the Immunity to Change: A New Approach to Personal Improvement,主题是如何给自己的工作与生活带来长期的积极改变(培养好习惯?)。

Office of the Dean

On Tuesday, March 11, HGSE will launch its first interactive online course on the HarvardX platform. Taught by HGSE's Professor Robert Kegan and Lecturer Lisa Lahey, "Unlocking the Immunity to Change: A New Approach to Personal Improvement" provides students with a theoretical and practical psychological approach to making real, positive change in ourselves and our organizations.

Like all HarvardX courses, this one is free and open to the public, and I invite you to sign up. You can watch this short course preview to learn more, or visit the course website to register. Please help us spread the word about this new opportunity.

All of us at HGSE are excited about the potential for learning and connection that HarvardX offers our alumni. Bob and Lisa's innovative course offers a unique chance to deepen our connections with each other and across multiple disciplines.

Best,

Jim
