There is a strong correlation associated with school attendance, academic achievement and post-secondary success. While, we should not condone unexcused absences and truancy, combating those issues should center on interventions and consequences that are behavioral and not academically based. Those issues are included in the Student Code of Conduct Discipline Matrix.
Data indicated that the 3 year average (2011-2014) just under 60% of all absences for High School students were unexcused. For the 2015-2016 School year the Broward County School Board voted to afford students the opportunity to make-up work for ALL absences.
However, this year the Broward County School Board is again grappling to change the policy by not affording students who have an unexcused absence to make-up work for full credit and grade.
If the cornerstone of education philosophy is to have students receive grades that accurately effect achievement, separating behaviors from the academic grade will ensure that students are evaluated on what they know, not how they behave. Florida Statute 1003.33 (a) indicates how report cards must clearly depict and grade students' academic performance, conduct and behavior and attendance.
