The Mailbag, as it is commonly called, is a weekly bulletin of information submitted by and for local public health in Minnesota. The Mailbag provides a coordinated, non-duplicative source of information for local public health professionals, including announcements, events, tools, resources, and jobs. This free service is designed with the following audiences in mind: SCHSAC members, CHS administrators, public health directors, local public health staff, MDH staff, and friends of local public health in Minnesota. Cultural Toolkits for African American, Somali, and Ukrainian cultures

Home visitors may find the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) cultural toolkits helpful as they provide basic information about the African American, Somali, and Ukrainian cultures. Home visitors may specifically benefit from the sections on breastfeeding, formula feeding, starting solids, and parenting. These toolkits are still a work in progress and additional toolkits will be added as they become available.

Resource and Webinar: Strengthening Partnerships between Public Health and Community-Based Organizations

Developed by the CDC Foundation in collaboration with HIP, this new report draws upon the experiences of over 144 health department and CBO leaders to make recommendations for how to strengthen partnerships between health departments and community-based organizations. Roots of Health Inequity: Free, Online Course from NACCHO and Human Impact Partners on Root Causes of Health Inequities

Check out Roots of Health Inequity, a free online course designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to address the root causes of health inequities, with topics such as the historical influences of public health, root causes related to race, gender, and class struggles, and building power to advance equity in public health practice.

Volunteer Opportunity: Seeking Grant Reviewers for the Addressing Diabetes through Community Solutions for Healthy Food Access RFP

The Minnesota Department of Health Diabetes and Health Behavior Unit is seeking reviewers to score applications for the Addressing Diabetes through Community Solutions for Healthy Food Access RFP.  Reviewers will be required to complete the following tasks:  Read the Addressing Diabetes through Community Solutions for Healthy Food Access Request for Proposals (PDF) and attachments. Attend or view the recording of an RFP Grant Review Information Session. Complete an External Partner Conflict of Interest (COI) Disclosure. Read through and score up to five applications prior to the virtual review meeting. Participate in one, three-hour virtual grant review meeting on July 18 from 1-4 p.m. Email final review scores and notes to MDH. We are accepting reviewer applications through July 3. If your is organization is planning to apply to this RFP opportunity, you are not eligible to be a grant reviewer. Help Me Connect, Minnesota’s premier website for expectant families and families with young children, has added a searchable listing for doulas and birth workers. New report on Minnesota’s school nurse workforce

The MDH school health data and reports webpage has new information and data on the Minnesota school nurse workforce which was collected in 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the health and wellbeing of students, families, school nurses, and educators which in turn has impacted school nurses and school health services staff. Through emails, calls, and website scans, the Minnesota Departments of Health and Education and partners set about collecting school nurse and health service staffing data from 94% of public school districts and charter school in Minnesota.  Read the complete Minnesota School Nurse Workforce: A 2022 Snapshot report.

Work with MDH on Overdose Fatality Reviews

The Overdose Prevention Unit is seeking partnership with at least five Local Public Health and/or Public Safety Departments who are interested in conducting Overdose Fatality Reviews. Overdose Fatality Reviews and Public Health and Safety Teams are two separate, companion models used by a growing number of communities across the country to strengthen their response to the overdose epidemic. Overdose Fatality Reviews are confidential meetings in which a diverse group of community stakeholders collaborate to share data and study the death of a specific individual to identify gaps in the system that could have saved that person's life. Public Health and Safety Teams are partnerships between public health officials, law enforcement representatives, and other local groups dedicated to preventing overdose deaths. Such teams are well positioned to help perform OFRs.

Call for Papers: Rural Health Disparities: Contemporary Solutions for Persistent Rural Public Health Challenges

Call for papers related to rural health disparities and public health for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's journal Preventing Chronic Disease. Manuscripts may cover topics such as social determinants of health, environment, policy, community initiatives, and more. An inquiry including an abstract is due July 19, 2024. Inquiries accepted must submit a final manuscript by January 24, 2025.

Resource: Heat & Health Tracker

This interactive map shows current, historical, and projected heat exposure data and associated health impacts. It offers regional, state, and county comparisons. It also includes the Heat and Health Index offering data on historical burden, heat sensitivity for chronic conditions, sociodemographic, natural and built environment characteristics at the county level.

Newcomer Tuberculosis Guidance for Health Professionals

The Minnesota Department of Health has published a provider guide containing tuberculosis screening recommendations for patients who are newcomers without official immigration status.
