The Mailbag, as it is commonly called, is a weekly bulletin of information submitted by and for local public health in Minnesota. The Mailbag provides a coordinated, non-duplicative source of information for local public health professionals, including announcements, events, tools, resources, and jobs. This free service is designed with the following audiences in mind: SCHSAC members, CHS administrators, public health directors, local public health staff, MDH staff, and friends of local public health in Minnesota. Applications open for Next Gen Lactation funding for IBCLC candidates in greater Minnesota (due May 20)

The mission of Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition (MBC) is working collaboratively to create environments where breastfeeding is valued and supported to achieve natural infant feeding equity in all Minnesota communities. MBC is pleased to announce a new round of Next Gen Lactation grant funding, which aims to foster a diverse clinical lactation workforce in Minnesota, representative of the state’s diversity. This round of funding is for 2 or 3 applicants in greater Minnesota. Applications open April 20, 2026 and close May 20, 2026. Decisions announced no later than June 1, 2026.

Funding Opportunity: Community-Led Solutions for Healthy Food Access and Diabetes Prevention and Care (due July 1)

The Center for Health Promotion at the Minnesota Department of Health has released a grant Request for Proposals (RFP) to support community-based solutions for healthy food access and diabetes prevention and management. Proposed projects should address food access at a systems or population level versus at an individual level. This RFP seeks project proposals to address barriers to accessing healthy foods or understanding and accessing nutrition information, education, or support services. These grants will run for about two years with a range of $25,000 - $37,500 annually. Applications are due July 1, 2026. Selected organizations must primarily and intentionally serve people who experience food and nutrition insecurity, with an emphasis on reaching populations at higher risk of prediabetes or diabetes and hospitalization/morbidity risk, including at least one of the following populations: • U.S. born and other African American/Black communities • American Indian communities • Asian/Pacific Islander communities • Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latine communities • People living with disabilities • Greater Minnesota Please share with your networks!

Request for Proposals: Private Well Protection Grant (through July 19)

The Request for Proposals (RFP) for 2026 is now open through Friday July 19th at 4:30 p.m. for Private Well Protection Grants. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) received funding from the Clean Water Fund to protect private well users. A portion of this funding is being offered as grants to promote private well testing among private well users. Each entity will have the opportunity to apply for a set amount of funding to provide and promote well testing for households that rely on private well water for drinking water. Eligible applicants include Community Health Boards/Local Public Health, County Units of Government, and Tribal Governments.

Doulas and birthworkers: Share your experience! (through June 30)

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is excited to share this opportunity for Minnesota doulas and birthworkers to share their experiences and expertise, in a workforce survey to learn more about who doulas are, where they work, and what they need to succeed. This survey takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and will close on June 30. If you are a doula or birthworker, please complete this important survey and share widely with your networks! How this data will be used: -Update baseline demographic and workforce data. -Identify important needs of each workforce. -Identify important strengths of each workforce. -Support strategic objectives to increase access to services. Five respondents will be randomly chosen to win a $100 gift card. Thank you for taking the time to share this important information! Results will be posted to the MDH Maternal Care Access webpage.

Midwives: Share your experience! (through June 30)

Rural Community Health Worker Conference Call for Presentation Proposals! (through June 30)

The Minnesota Community Health Worker Alliance invites proposals for the 2026 Rural Community Health Worker Conference to be held October 8th and 9th in Worthington, Minnesota. The theme for this year’s conference is "Hands On, Hearts In: Practicing the Skills That Power Rural CHW Work". This fully in-person conference will have approximately three Plenaries (1 hour), twelve breakout sessions (approximately 45 minutes) and up to 20 poster presentations. Apply now through June 30th to present at this conference that will bring together CHWs, CHW Certificate students, CHRs, Promatoras, CHW employers, public health professionals, heath providers, policy makers, payers, academic and training partners. You can also sponsor or exhibit at this event.

Become a Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST)

Learn how to properly install car seats & booster seats and educate caregivers in your community! Consider becoming a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST). CPSTs play an important role in preventing injuries by helping families through education & hands-on support. Who should attend: Public health staff, healthcare providers, EMS/fire/law enforcement, child care providers, social workers, and anyone working with children and families. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive national certification. The course provides a strong foundation, but becoming confident and well-versed as a CPST takes ongoing practice and experience. Technicians build their skills over time by regularly attending checkup events, working directly with caregivers, & staying up to date on evolving best practices, laws, & technology. $25K Funding for Diabetes Community-Clinical Linkage Projects (due June 1)

Organizations in Minnesota are invited to apply for a $25,000 opportunity to strengthen community and clinical linkages (CCLs) for type 2 diabetes prevention and management. This year long project, led by Mathematica in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Health, will support programs serving African American, American Indian, and rural communities. Selected organizations will implement an enhancement or strategy to improve how CCLs can improve health by addressing health-related social needs like access to healthcare, healthy foods, and transportation. Eligible applicants include organizations delivering DPP, DSMES, SDPI, or similar programs, and partnerships are encouraged. Applications are due June 1, 2026 at 11:59 pm CT. 5/21: Perinatal Education ECHO Series Kick-Off Session: Minnesota Maternal Mortality, Findings from the 5-Year Report 2017-2021

The MNPQC Perinatal Education ECHO Series is a free, virtual learning opportunity designed for those passionate about improving care for perinatal health conditions. This session will focus on Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs) and the recent release of the Minnesota MMRC Report from 2017-2021. Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs) are considered the gold standard for maternal mortality surveillance because they use a multidisciplinary review process, draw on multiple data sources, and assess pregnancy-relatedness, preventability, and contributing factors. This presentation summarizes findings from Minnesota’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee Five-Year Report (2017–2021). It focuses on the top three causes of pregnancy-related deaths and highlights strategies to reduce preventable maternal deaths.

The vision portion includes a review of myopia, hyperopia, and amblyopia, performing pupillary light, and red reflex procedures. This training will include time to practice skills learned.
